Any soldering iron or station that is around 20-25 watt with a 0.8mm tip is perfect. I think installing the coolrunners or any other soldering job is as much down to being able to confidently use the soldering iron as it is anything else.

If you want cheap and very reliable I use Antex CS18 with 0.5mm tip...Tip is good to get into those small tricky places.....

I like my hakko 936 temp adjustable station, having the ability to change temperature is great. Plenty of tip sizes easily available. Old model, so the price is reasonable.

This is the best iron i have ever used. I have went up from a rat shack iron spending a bit more each time, for regular soldering though this is not necessary a simple hakko 936 will work great and tips are cheap and its better than the chinese 2900 iron.

Aoyue 2900 or Csi 2900 are cheap and perfect, also double up nicely for reballing with their inch wide tips ;)

It does work, i had both of them, it is cheap yes and the quality shows it wont last a yr.

i just use a goot iron... Like its a pretty big tip (1mm or 1.5mm) but thats all goods... it provides an even heat source and makes sure i always get a nice solder joint...

I never add solder to any points except the hana point on the slims (as it has no factory solder)... The wires are all pretinned and so are the points, so i just flux them with paste... Put wire on, hold my 40W goot for about 2 seconds and bam.... perfect, strong and neat joint... Almost 0 chance of a bridge...

I use the one on my 968 - but I have to disagree with xboxmoddz.....the Aoyue 2900 is fantastic, and good quality, and to be honest, If I needed another one, that's the one I would buy ...

I done 1 RGH so far and that was with a cheap solder iron with a 4 mm tip, it worked great and didn't have any problem with it.

I'm going to buy a new station. Is 1.3mm tip small enough? The station seem to be 48w with 150-450 celsius. Is that enough? It's from dibotech, it's a pretty cheap station at around $30.

I just bought the Aoyue 936 off Amazon for $39.99 US. Looks solid and ordered a .8mm tip to go with it. 30watt iron goes from 150-400 degrees

I don't do much soldering, but do pretty decent work with my Weller WD1002.Funny story tho, I went to Frys and they had the WRS1002X marked down from $899 to $799....but the tag on the box said $199, so, I bought TWO! AWESOME!, but, it doesnt come with an iron. Told one of my buddies in purchasing I needed a Weller EC1201A (he dont know any better), he asked why,I said because it fits my Weller WD1002/WRS1002X. Two weeks go by, I get impatent, and go down and spend the $125 on the iron! Get to work the next Monday, my buddy tells me NO ONE carries that iron, so, here is you a WD1002. I explained to him it was for a government project I was working on at my house...he said "Iknow!"
