Coolrunner somtines only sends one reset pulse

Hi Guys,

I've just installed the Coolrunner and everything seems to be going great, although I have one small issue.

Occasionally when booting the console, the Coolrunner will only attempt to glitch once (indicated by the green LED) and if this is not successful, the console will just sit idle on a black screen (no dipping noise from fans).

The only thing that seems to remedy this is turning the xbox off and on again, where it will boot almost instantly.

No read errors or bad blocks found when dumping the nand.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Jasper 256mb / Wire install. Used Nand-x. Coolrunner rev b. Cap solder bridged.

You could try different wire paths. I wouldn't unsolder the points on the board though if they are good. If you need I would unsolder it on the coolrunner side. You could try moving the yellow wire to the next hole below the normal one or the green wire by inner corner cutout for the fan. Or move the blue one to the top of the board (ran wire along the edge of the heatsinks away from the coils).

Re: Coolrunner sometimes only sends one reset pulse

I'd suspected that's what I may need to do. I don't really fancy the hassle of re-routing the wires to be honest haha.

I might just live with it as it's usually booting within a couple of seconds.

I'll continue to monitor this thread in-case anyone happens to know of an easier method ;) haha.

Appreciate the input guys.

Wrap wires in insulating tape. You can do that without having to desolder. That did it for me:)

Another great suggestion - hadn't thought of that! may give insulation a go.

Keep them coming! ;)

I think on my next install i might get some aluminium tape and wrap it around the wires to act as a shield and then put heat shrink wrap around to prevent any possible shorting.
I just did something similar (like just now tested). On the CPU_RST, I twisted it up with a bare wire to use as a shield/drain and grounded it to a spot on the board near the solder point (I scraped some coating off so I had a place to solder to). I then ran both wires in a piece of heat shrink with only the CPU_RST wire coming out (the shield wire is only grounded at one end and the other end left inside the heat shrink). I routed it right through the center of the coils and it still boots instantly. So ya, shielding helps and I would suggest that the OP does something similar if he takes the notion to attempt a fix.

Krafter, can you post a pic? Sounds like it could be a viable solution to a lot of people.

Re: Coolrunner sometimes only sends one reset pulse

OK - I'm curious now of how best to take this forwards as it's starting to bug me.

I seem to have narrowed this down to only occurring at first startup. I like to turn my xbox off at the wall, as I already have another xbox on standby.

It would appear that if I switch it on at the plug, leave it a few seconds and power on, the xbox won't even attempt to glitch, just sits there on a black screen.

Now, if I turn it off, wait a few seconds, and turn it on a gain, it glitches instantly 99% of the time. Or at least i'm able to hear the fans glitching.

Is this normal behavior of the Coolrunner? Is re-routing the wires likely to resolve this?

If this is likely to fix, I'm willing to take pictures as part of the process.

Thanks in advance guys.

Thanks for your suggestion Martin, I may try that.

RROD - I can't obtain any new pictures until i finish work today, but I've attached another version of the picture with less compression applied. Not sure if this will help?

I didn't spot any bridged points when I'd cracked open the case and removed the motherboard yesterday.

You're quite right. From the picture that you've outlined, there does appear to be an object there. But from the shot which shoes the routing of the green, yellow & blue wire, I can't see it.

Perhaps something to do with the camera flash?

Either way, i'll take a look tomorrow morning as i've got a day off.
