RGH Corona 4GB NAND R/W error, "Failed to Get Disk Geometry", HELP!

Hey guys,

So, I posted a little bit back asking about my RGH woes: http://team-xecuter.com/forums/showthread.php/147229-Corona-V6-and-CR3-Lite?p=1016641

I've gone and purchased some 4GB NAND R/W kits. I say some since I burned the contacts off the first one I tried.

After the first fail, I de-soldered all the pads, re-soldered them, and soldered on another QSB, which went quite swimmingly to be honest.

So I hook everything up, plug into the SD card reader. Card shows up in Windows, which asks to reformat the drive. Ignore that.
Hit the "Read NAND" button, select Corona 4GB, and the card pops up in the Drive list. I try to read, and get "Failed to read Disk Geometry"....

No idea what that means. Searching the forum only reveals a closed thread that (understandably) got no help due to a cloned board. http://team-xecuter.com/forums/show...-To-Get-Disk-Geometry?highlight=disk+geometry

Anyone have any insight as to this error? I've attached pictures of my QSB soldering. They're not very good, sorry, but my camera lost focus if I got any closer to the board.

It doesn't even look like all your points are soldered to me could be the picture. Did you damage those pads before fitting this qsb? And does your console boot up with no problems?

Yeah I've noticed that myself. The connections don't look perfect, but upon close inspection I can see solder leading up to each of the pads. I haven't tried booting the machine since applying this new QSB, I'll try that now.

How could I damage the pads, or better yet, how would I be able to tell if they were damaged? I didn't burn any black spots around them, and they all looked nice clean lumps when I re-soldered them...

Anyone have any insight as to what the error means? All I need really is a thread to start troubleshooting, but I don't know what that means.

Try using some flux and more solder

There is plenty of flux on the board obviously. but you really need to stop being greedy with the solder. it should look like a nice smooth ramp flowing up to the top of the qsb pads.

Thanks for the help everyone. If I don't end up fixing it(I have updates) I will re-solder the QSB.

So, fiddled with the ribbon, and have been getting different results. Go through the whole process, and when I click "Read", the following errors pop up in the prompt:

So, it's failing on some file handle, but I'm unsure if it's the windows file, or reading from the NAND. I've fully updated Windows, made sure .Net is up to date, running app as administrator, but still no dice.

Any advice on this one guys?

I had that problem. Check the ribbon cable and see if it is snug on both ends and switch usb card readers and get a very cheap one. Thats what i do and i put a peace of paper on the top of the microsd part so it fit snug and wouldnt wobble and it works fine

I use the built in card reader in my laptop and it works great. Better than two USB card readers I have.

you could be just wiggling the qsb causing a point to connect or not. why not just reheat each pad and its qsb pad and add solder to your tip and drag upwards when its molten to make sure you have good connection to each point. Its easy and a few of us have already said it was a good idea. What is the point in asking for advice if you wont take it when its given?

Ill have to try that. Sounds alot easier than the usb and less of a hassle. Just hope it works for me because windows 8 does not like drivers

I did take the advice, and had said I would re-solder if I couldn't find another solution. It being easy is an opinion, and since my solder skills are not very strong, I wanted to exhaust my "solderless" solutions before approaching that. In my defense, wiggling the SD ribbon did improve the results I was getting.

were you able to boot your system with the corona kit installed?
Took this advice, put the box back together.... and now it doesn't turn on...
The RGH board lights up when I plug the power in, but nothing after that. No fans, no lights, nothing. I just don't see how I could have fried the motherboard, all my solder jobs look clean....
The one possibility I see, is maybe I busted the ribbon that connects the front panel to the front board? I just feel like I should see something move...

Looks like I'm sh*t out of luck...
