The metal would be (probably) tin.

It's also called shielding. The idea is that rogue frequencies emit from the Xbox and can interfere with other equipment (such as the TV).

IMHO if it wasn't needed then it wouldn't be there.

I'm saying leave it as is. I know that people do remove it and don't report any problems, but still - if it's there, it's there for a reason.

Plexi doesn't offer any electronic shielding as it's non-conductive.

I wonder if an expanded mesh might work just as well as a shield? Sort of like a limited faraday cage. Might work - and it would still let those that like lighting their house from their Xbox drop in LEDs they could see.

I think it would be a 'suck it and see' on a case by case issue. Some people may never need to worry about this as their Xbox isn't anywhere near anything else...

I was confused the other day when people were compaining about the interference, now I know why 'cos my 'box was open. :)

My whole room is basically as NASA project of electroics. One of my XBOXes is in a full Plexiglass Box. I dont get any weird happenings goin on.

I took out the shielding and had problems with s-video and interfearence on the screen. Then I got the official cable which were a lot better shielded then those all systems in one cables, and all my video problems were fixed.

I removed mine from two xboxs with no problem and I have one next to my tv, dvd, and receiver.
