I have wanted a custom xbox jewel since i saw them on the net. i dont know how to get the jewel off though. i saw on a site you take the box apart, unscrew the screw then wrench it out or something - im not sure. i dont want to take off the metal cover on the top of my box's lid because it is fixed on by little metal flap things. if theres another way to get it out, please help me. i am a noob.

Well first if you take the thin metal plate off you won't kill your xbox. But if you don't want to just take a knife and push under and twist lol. It can brake if you do it that way so don't get pisse at me if it does.

Well, yet again, you do not need it. It is only RF shielding, which has to be in there by law when it was manufactured. But, I can certainly understand you not wanting to mess it up too much in the first month. Yeah, it'll go back in, no prob. Just pop it out with a screwdriver on each side. It should come out with no damage whatsoever. You can slide it back in on the same slots.

you may want to het the back side of your case with a hair dryer. this will loosen the sticky pad that is keeping the jewel on.

Just go to xbox-scene.com for tutorials.

Take the metal thing off, its just for cooling. I used wood glue to stick foil onto the inside of the lid (where the metal thing was) and my xbox temperature is cooler than it was before because there's more space for air to circulate and the foil absorbs some of the heat. Its better for this big metal thing to be off than on.
Plus, it makes your XBOX lighter. However, when you do the jewel mod, make sure no exposed wire touches the foil because you will short your lighting device.

Also if you do more customisations/mods, having this removed should make it easier to put the lid back on again. More space for wires e.t.c.
Check out my XBOX, my jewel mod is two sets of led's connected to a sub-mini toggle switch at the back of the xbox hidden in the grill. I used a Dremel to cut the hole for the switch. If you want to do this though, I warn you it's 44 solder joints.:D

If you put the metal shield back, you wont be able to put a light behind it without modifing it so you might as well leave it off if you are going that route.

You might as well leave the metal shielding off. I took them out of mine and haven't bothered putting them back.

Hey, your jewel looks sharp! I like it. Have you considered modifying it so the LED's change colors for, like, HDD or LAN activity? I think that would be nifty. Or do think that might become obnoxious? :) Good jorb!

dude, just take the metal shield off by prying up on the little metal tabs with a flathead screwdriver. you can easily push them back down and theyll lock into place. after you remove the metal shield. stick the XB top cover into the freezer for about 10 minutes. take it out and give it a nice solid punch in back of where the XB jewel is. it should pop right off.

You guys like my jewel huh? I'm gonna sell some kits on ebay.co.uk If you want one, PM me.

The LED's will be pre soldered to the "ring" shape ready to attach with the chrome sub-mini toggle switch and full instructions, boxed. I could easily make it change colour when the hdd is being used, but it would flash a lot. Yeah PM me and I'll send you a kit with this adaptation. These kits will probably cost about £8.99. Of course, if you buy one with ebay, you could get it cheaper.
I mean, the whole thing was 44 solder points, but with the kit would you only have to do a maximum of 8. It accords to how many colours you want. I could make them half green, half red, or whatever you like. Just PM me.

It is one of the best sites for help and for tutorials. This is the site that I gave to my guys when they started to mod boxes at work. Noob friendly. Good luck.
