[Answered] Cut my losses?

I'll apologize in advance for the wall of text. I am a total noob on the 360 mod scene and I'm not sure what information is helpful here.

Too Long Didnt Read: Purchased RGH Falcon with HDD from Craigslist seller for Christmas. 3 weeks later E74. Blames me and says I need a slim, which he has for a cost.

Cliff notes version here as best I can: For Christmas my wife decided to purchase an RGH Xbox 360. It was a Falcon with a 160 GB HDD (he had disassembled the case for the HDD and inserted a 160 GB as it only says 20 GB on it) and he told me it has a cool runner in it. I loved it, but the problems started early. On Christmas, it froze after about 2 hours of moderate use (inserting my game discs and backing them up to HDD for about 30 minutes, playing for the rest of the time) and then would not boot at all. He responded to this message, said some wire had come loose from the GPU and that he could have it fixed no problem. He repaired it for free and everything seemed to be fine.

Then on Saturday as I was playing a game the graphics went weird into little blocks and froze. I rebooted the console and instantly got an E74 error. I bugged the guy on Saturday and finally got a hold of him on Sunday. Long story short he tried to tell me that Falcons can only be played for about 2 to 4 hours at a time and that with the amount of time I spend on my Xbox (4 hours a night, rather it be watching tv, netflix or actual gameplay) that the console just cant handle it. He now says he has a RGH slim that he could move the HDD from the phat case into and that it wouldnt fail on me. He of course wants another 150 to do this.

So finally my question: Should I look into a repair for the falcon or just cut my losses and get a slim? I've read some of the services thread and I could get the Falcon repaired for between $75 to $100 but with how much I use my Xbox I dont want to pay for a repair that will only last me 6 months. I've thought about trying to sell the Falcon for parts and getting a Demon (the switch for retail, switch for RGH one) installed in my slim but I'm not sure how much upkeep that requires.

Thanks.

Edit: I noticed from reading other posts about e74 that this might help: It does boot to Xell when I press the eject button. I get a blue screen with my dvd key.

Edit 2: Looks like I will be sending my HDD from my Falcon and having it installed on a new RGH box based on the advice I was given here. Thanks guys.

I would say get a refund from him. If it's too late for that, then at the very least don't buy from him ever again.
Lol thats already a given. I posted a Craigslist ad warning other people since he states he "does this all the time about 300 to 500 consoles a year". The only refund he is offering is he will take the Falcon from me with all chords, take the HDD put it in the slim and sell me the slim for $150. I already feel like I lost 200 in the deal. They have that saying "fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice...."

Falcons were ok but still not that reliable sounds like you were sold a bodged rrod to me.

Ideally you are better of with a minimum of a Jasper console which the last model prior to the slim but after the Falcon. To be honest I have found them to be more reliable than slims but as long as you keep them ventilated then both models should work fine.

I've replaced the GPU on many an E74 Falcon and they behave fine afterwards. Did my son's console about 2-3 years ago and it's still going strong. It's a GPU issue, nothing more.

This was my belief but seller was adamant that even with a new GPU installed it would be burned out in a few months of heavy use.

He already sold you a bodge job, is trying to get more money from you and yet you still take him on his word?

Lol no. I dont trust anything he says. That is why I am here. To talk to people who I can trust know what they are talking about.

So sounds like the consensus is that if repaired properly, the falcon should be fine. I've tried a refund and the guy refuses. I paid cash so not much I can do there. If I could I would just refund and get a slim. Oh well. Off to the request for services section I guess.

No. My wife bought this for me and had no idea what she was looking for. I found this website in my search for a fix.

Wife done good, the seller done bad.

State your area/location and make a request for a GPU reball on the forum for your falcon and you should be set.
