I need to run network cable through the wall from my switch to my xbox. I have two choices, 1) buy bulk cable, heads, and crimper, or 2) buy 50 feet of headed cable and cut it at one end, take it throught the wall and then solder it back. Second option is cheaper. However, I have no idea whether this could somehow screw up trasmission quality?

Soldering it back together will not work. You will have way to much noice and interferance. Best thing would be to go to Radio Shack and get one of their cheap crimpers and a couple of plugs. THen just match the color on the other plug and crimp it on.

Either my couch or my chair.
the ideal thing would be to put a new end on it. resoldering it should be a last resort, but it should work if thats what you want to do.

Alternate option - buy two Cat5 punchdown wall covers, and two low power "old construction" mounting boxes (electrical box with no back to them). Wire them up according to the diagram supplied in the packaging. Then just go regular cat 5 cable between the Cat5 sockets in the wall to each device.

All parts available at your local hardware megastore (Home Depot or Lowes in the USA).

You'll be cutting through drywall/plasterboard, but can use a utility knife if you are careful. This will give you a MUCH cleaner job than just drilling a hole through the wall and crimping a plug on each end.
