If i install a dashboard like evox can i still turn the chip off and play on xbox live or with the files be detected on the hard drive

yes, turn the chip off and it takes you straight to original MS Dash

should i set the dashboard name as evoxdash.xbe or default.xbe

You should not have to change the name of anything. If you turn the chip off and the MS-Dash boots then you're golden

You should probably start looking in an EvoX specific forum for questions about the dash and on setting it up.
