Db level of extra fans

The question has been asked before about the loudness of adding fans. And I wanted to see how much louder my Modded Xbox is than a stock Xbox. So I compared my modded 1.6, to my 1.4 Xbox which is bone stock, no mods. BTW, I have a fairly nice digital Db meter. The loudest spots on my Xboxes seemed to be right in front of the power/eject buttons. The DVD and HDD were at rest.

Just for reference: A faint whisper is rated at 40 db.

My modded 1.6 (which has 4 fans in it, all running on 12v) was 68.1 db.

My stock 1.4 (7v fan) was 55.7 db.

With some quick calculations, I deduced that my modded Xbox is about as loud as 2 stock Xboxes running at the same time. This sounds like a big difference, but the difference of 12.4 db isn't really that noticeable.

To me, the fans are certainly worth the small increase in noise. :)

well done i cant bleev u thort bout that :S

Hmm. I thought a whisper was 15db, and a normal conversation was 60db.
So, in theory, you shouldn't hear the stock Xbox over the sound of normal conversation.

This is all academic anyway (but an interesting question) - because if any of you are like me, you use the Xbox with the volume turned up too loud anyway, removing ANY chance of hearing what the Xbox might be doing.

Well, some sources I looked at varied a lot. I saw anywhere from 10 to 40db for a whisper. But a 15db whisper would be a really really quiet whisper. Hardly audible. I guess it just depends how loud of a whisperer you are.

erm yes, i still dont understand why you would want to measure the sound of your xbox. you must have been really bored. when im bored i mod my xbox not listen to it.

Only took a couple minutes to measure.

Here's 3 of the fans. The 4th fan is a 40mm. It's on the bottom of the HDD tray, blowing up on the HDD. I don't have a pic of that one.

This fan has clear shields on the side of it to direct the air through the GPU heatsink. It works pretty good. You can feel air blowing out on the other side of the heatsink. I had to mount the fan on the end because the DVD drive fits so close to the top of the heatsink, of course.
