LITEON DG-16D4S - SLIM Dead Drive ?

Hi there

Hope someone can help,

I have a liteon DG-16d4s

Problem I have is that that 3 motors wont move when I press eject or load it with a disk- spindle, eject & worm.

Laser comes on no prob.

Initially I thought it was a bad flash - so I followed all the tuts on here and re-flashed the drive using the winbond method.

But this still never worked.

I have tried the actual drive with another PCB and it works fine - So I know it must be the PCB hence y I tried the re-flash.

Is it possible to fry the drive by putting the cable in the wrong way and still have the TX products and JF recognise and read/write to the drive?

I have uploaded a Pic in case someone can spot an obvious problem!

Thanks for all your help,

Have you thought that the kamikaze may have failed.

That is quite a big hole. And it is slightly of the centre area

I am not doubting it may have worked/never worked. you have not said.

But with such a big area for dust/static/moisture/anything to get in, the chip may have gone

And yes it is possible to fry the drive putting the cable the wrong way round and still have the drive recognise in Windows/JF.

It depends on which component is fried.

Hi there it is not a failed kamikaze as the drive was not responsive before I done the Kamikaze.

I dont know the history of this drive but it was me who done the Kamikaze, and everything went how it should according to the tuts. Everything that they said should happen happened.

If the drive has been fried - does anyone have a wiring diagram or know of the components that fail when the white plug has been put in upside down?

Or is there certain voltages at certain points that I can test in order to check if it has been cooked?

Thanks

Martin - Here is a better pic of that area....

Not sure if the POUT fix is the issue as none of the motors worked on the drive before I tried the kamikaze fix.

THanks

Probably need to rebuild some traces (looks like there is only one) because of the chip on the PCB.

Unfortunately when a component blows, it doesn't wave a big flag saying 'I'm broken'.

Only in rare cases will you see a noticeable problem with it.

Therefore swap this out with another IC and see if it solves the problem.

I changed over the pcb with one I know that works, and the drive worked fine which makes me think its the pcb.

If this is a blown component and there isnt a relatively simple fix then ill just buy a new board.

Save all this hassle :|

You could, but i am sure, they are some serious failed kamikazes out there.

Just get a cheap old, desolder the chip and put the new one in place.

There's 3 on ebay for about £10 all in.

Golden - The board was unresponsive before I tried the Kamikaze fix - so thats y I am suspecting who ever had this before me has fried the board.

Trading a working dg-16d2s for a working unlocked dg-164ds board from a guy on this forum.

I have plenty in stock so hopefully should have this slim up and running tomorrow night!

Thanks for all your input everyone - Mods you can close this thread if you like

No, i know you said close the thread, but i am talking about desoldering the controller chip from a f'ed one and replacing onto the one your talking about

But hey, if you have a few laying about. Crack on.
