dead hard drive

Hi, my HDD died in my version 1.0 xbox. I've just installed xcecuter 2.6 mod and need to know how to install vanilla HDD. I have no back up of the old HDD. mod is working but wont recognise new HDD partition,

Hey,
I see this is your first post. Welcome to the forums.
I'm trying to make some sense out of what you wrote. Baically your hard drive died and you want to install another one right?
Does it matter to you if you can't get into the microsoft dashboard? Or go on xbox live?
If these don't matter than you can pretty much use any hard drive set to the cable select setting.
If it does matter than you need a hard drive that is lockable. The easiest way to do that is pick a hard drive from this list:

Now in order to use it on the xbox you need to format it. The easiest way to do that is with Slayer. Do a search here and on www.xbox-scene.com for more info on that. Make sure you read the documentation that comes with it.
There are other ways like you can make a boot disc from UnleashX and format from there. Or you can send raw commands over FTP.

Just out of curiosity, don't you still need the files from the old HDD on the new HDD for it to work (C & E folders)?

No, you do not. I accidently reformatted my HDD before I had backed it up. It'll boot up to the chip. From there, you just reformat whatever HDD you decide to install with the X3 bios. In fact, you might even be able to "knock knock" start up the XBox without a HDD in it at all, although I'm probably wrong on that guess.

no i dont go on Xbox live and couldnt give a rats about ms dashboard, just want to get the thing working, My kids are giving me major grief on this one, not to mention halo2 is my stress relief

I've downloaded sh!tloads of reading material, but finding the software (evox) is going to be the hardest part. will let you know how i go

well finally figured the [email protected]@rd out with some help from forums at eurasia.nu. (and here)

easiest way was to flash bios with xecuter 2.4983 bios created using xbm2 (had m8 bios but didnt work with the following). next download slayer's auto installer, create iso on dvd and boot xbox. followed prompts (menus for how you want to format drive and away you go 10 minutes later up and running again. slayers has quite a few apps built in as well.
