All too often, guns in games are the equivalent of fast food, tossed aside the second you empty the clip. Bungie wants to change that with Destiny, offering up unique, uniquely named firearms that are basically adverts for the history and capabilities of the players carrying them. The idea is that you'll get a sense of where somebody's been in the game's vast, interplanetary sandbox just by glancing at what they're holding. "Exotic" weapons can't be created or bought - they must be plucked from the bowels of one or other sub-surface temple, drifting space hulk or abandoned colony. Say hello, for example, to Closing Time, a sniper rifle that's probably older than the building you'll find it in.

According to art lead Tom Doyle, "carrying this gun is like wearing a badge of honor." The key difference being that you can't blow somebody's head off with a badge of hono(u)r. Good work, Doyle. Carry on.
Besides being a powerful cannon, Closing Time is apparently proof of the sophistication of Bungie's new engine. "Dave Stammel really wanted to push our new shader system with this weapon," Doyle explained in a blog post. "We have as many different materials as possible on this asset: gunmetal, plasteel, wood, plastic, and ghillie netting. It showcases the rendering strength and diversity of our new engine."

Removing my hype-tinted goggles for a second, this basically looks like a sniper rifle with some netting on it. Are you convinced by any of this, or do Destiny's online-only charms leave you thirsting for another Halo? Check out the below footage for more.
Destiny hits shelves in 2014, for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PC and other consoles we won't mention because honestly, why would we bother?
