Is that how you started Martin, getting other people to do it for you? I know you're good, and very knowledgeable, but there is only one way you got there, practice and dedication.
You forgot intelligence.

I was smart enough to practice on dead motherboards and PCBs. I thought if I can't remove and refit SMDs on a PC motherboard, I'll have no chance elsewhere. I was right too, as it took a few attempts to get the technique right. I have yet to ruin something which was working previously, so I have that to my name. Can you say the same?

It takes a special kind of idiot to practice with something working and expect it to work at the end, especially with something as sensitive as surface mount components.

Biggest problem here is that those who fail actually don't want to take the time to learn. No-one can help them, so they'll carry on destroying consoles. They'll get there eventually but will break a few along the way before they get there. I don't mind that - it's their choice. All I ask is they don't take up unnecessary time and bandwidth on our forums doing so.

I'm on no pedestal here and happy to help those who help themselves. The OP in this case, had no such desire and was only going to be happy once he finally screwed his console permanently.

It looks like he got his wish.

LOL, fair point.

Fortunately I can thanks to a bit of skill, plenty of practice and help from great people on forums like this.

And Ionix, have you learned nothing yet? Keep the board and practice on it before you screw your slim up too, you now have a perfect opportunity to prove Martin wrong and show some capacity for learning!

I would LOVE to be proved wrong!

Use that board for practising on. If you can't solder to the small points near the HANA on this one, forget about the slim.

i actually did the same thing although i have my chip side pad remaining where the resistor was. I sneezed trying to remove the wire and pulled the pad.... easy enough to do. Turns out it was a defective coolrunner. Put the second one i had in and it booted xell first cycle. put the shroud back on and popped the resistor....

thumbs up on that

i studied for months reading tips and tricks etc
i purchased all the correct equipment ( not cheap ebay ripoffs) i actually started on my own working xbox and perfectly executed the install 1st time and never looked back

the thing is nowa days people dont want to spend money always looking for the cheaper option
this makes mistakes and costs more than the actual propper equipment

my first iron was a cheap one from the local hardware store it worked ok but not as good as my weller one now

No need to be perfect. Just know your limits. You wont see me plastering walls, laying bricks, plumbing, tiling etc as I'm crap. I pay others to do it. Really not hard to grasp, is it?

I did the same I did ALOT of reading before I even attempted it I never really soldered before but practiced for about 30 min on a broken board. And I have done 5 RGH's now without messing up. But I think the main reason why people mess up because they don't like to read. And they end up throwing away $200

All I use is a $10 20w iron from RadioShack and flux. All has been perfect

Grasp? I can do all of those things on a basic scale, all by my belief in myself, I never looked at forums how to tile my bathroom/or "sent it to a pro" to fix.

I totally agree with there is a limit, but I also agree with self accomplishment. Nothing felt better than my first, mod chip install and I learned like you all stated.

Limits are set by yourselves to be broken ;)

If your limit was to solder a diode, but you wanted to solder more (learn) where is your next limit.

If we didn't "learn" to surpass our limits, most of us wouldn't be commenting now would we. Martin your more than welcome to see my bathroom ;p

I agree that limits are meant to be broken but if someone is first learning to mountain climb, it wouldn't be a wise choice to choose Mount Everest to practice on.

Xbox 360 consoles are so cheap nowadays its a mistake I can live with.

I mean A$150 for a brand new slim , second hand falcons are 10 a penny

I'm sure you guys have stuffed something up before.

The rest of my soldering was fine infact, I can't believe I even rooted it so badly.

I tried to solder it with a 60w soldering iron

I even fixed it twice, only to try and test the strengh of my solders, which were obviously stronger than the traces on the motherboard

Edit: there may be hope still in c4n27 I hope. I'm still investigating....

If anyone wants to actually help me instead of ridiculing me, please post otherwise sod off

Have to agree with Martin on this.

I haven't done any RGH installs yet, but I have been practicing on a dead Falcon motherboard... and OMG did I make a mess of it. However, that practice, plus some tips from Martin and Dosk3n helped me refine my technique.

Keep that dead board and practice soldering to some of the other small points near the HANA chip. I've got a second dead board here I'll be using as practice before I take my iron to an actual, working console.

Also, I have to echo the sentiments on quality gear. I had a crappy 30W iron from a hardware store and soldering was painful. I've now got a variable temperature, 60W CSI soldering station... and it helps a LOT.

Cool - then throw it in the bin (or keep as a practice board) and get another one. Don't waste anyone else's time on this mistake, eh?

I think you'll find you'll be 'sodding off' a lot sooner than I will, with attitude like that. You messed it up royally and instead of taking advice from those in the know, you made the choice to kill it. If you don't want to take advice, don't ask for it.

Nice advice, how about you stop wasting your time posting in this thread, considering all you are doing is trolling anyway.

If anyone is feeling helpful and has a dead board lying around could someone please test for continuity between the point in the circle in this photo and some of the other points ie c4n27? I would do it myself but the trace on the other side of the board is gone

Ok - enough's enough.

Thread closed.

You were given advice after royally f**king up the board. You declined the advice and made it worse. That's YOUR choice, nobody else's.

You've already said the boards are cheap, so stop wasting time on it.

Post any more sh*t about this board and you'll be permanently banned. 4 pages of crap just because you won't listen to people who are smarter than you is a waste of everyone's time and bandwidth.
