Any ideas on what I can try now?

I Kamikaze'd by pcb. Worked fine, unlocked, put on custom FW, plays media both original and none fine.

After about a day, the drive stops working. I get the open drive error. Wont read any disks.

I though it was rotten luck and my laser had given up, so I replaced it with a new one. Removed solder etc.

Same error...open drive.

However I have noted that on BOTH the old and new laser, I get no light from it. When I run it without no top on, it powers up, moves on the slider, it moves up and down trying to focus, but I have no red laser light at all on either.

I have read that if you drill too deep on a Kamikaze method this can damage the pcb, but this was all working fine.

Any ideas where I can look now or do we think the PCB is causing this. Did I buy a duff laser replacement maybe?

Cheers

I know the drill hold looks big, but its only the surrounding area at the top that dips like a funnel. The drill hold itself it smaller in the center.

I can flash this to stock and back to custom using alcohol on a cotton stick perfectly fine.

The only thing that doesn't work is the laser....and as I said, it worked fine one day then just didn't the next. It went off mid-game!

Sounds like you drilled to deep and there is a communication error of sorts, what happens when you swipe the hole with a cotton swap and some rubbing alcohol? Does it still not show the Laser?

I have heard that some people have has success using wire glue to close the hole, inadvertently forming the missing connection.

To be fair I did mention under the picture that I can swab the drill hole and flash fine back and forth.

And I understand the point about drilling too deeply...but i'm just confused as to why would it work at first then not at all. I drilled this like three months ago, and it only died recently after a flash back to stock them to custom (dash update).

It was okay, then froze during gameplay. Then I got the open drive error on next reboot.

Could this really be the drill hole after so long?

To be honest the drill hole looks ok to me, have you made sure all the connections are good (ribbon etc)? correct fw too?

Its hard to really diagnose these things without having it infront of me.

There is no way anyone can tell whether that Kamikaze is ok with the image provided.

You need a Magnifying glass at the best of times and even then it's sometimes not clearly evident if you caught one of the other lines in close proximity.

I asked you if the laser shows when you swab the hole with Alcohol :rolleyes2:

Did you try a replacement PCB? If not try one, TX do sell replacement unlocked PCB's.

Ah I see, sorry I misunderstood. I'll check the laser light while swabbing.

Could FW stop the laser light from working?

Yes the FW was working fine as I was mid game. Perhaps I could get a replacement ribbon as my next option.

Thanks

Laser does not show when swabbing while running. opened and closed several times to persuade it.

I managed to flash it back to stock perfectly fine.

Is it likely I have a fault replacement laser or is it more likely the PCB? I don't want to have to spend £40 on a new pcb to find its the laser after all.

I don't expect anyone to be able to tell me for sure of course!! Just opinions on likelihood based on experience. :)
