dg-16d4s using mt1339e and mx25l2005 spi

Sorry this might sound like a dumb ? but why would anyone that can do this mod even do it? I mean if you can do this why not do the kamikazee hack? It seems I'm missing something but can't figure out what...

Anyone care to shed some light, I'd be interested in doing this but I don't see the benefits..

I have a pcb for the DG-16d4s with the MT1339e chip on it. When I click on 0x8c JF beeps and shows 0x00 but when I try to write to the pcb JF say's its locked.
Anyone have any ideas?
