Good god! I want to get into electronics and do stuff like that. Now I'm sad.
You're 14. Nothing stopping you, AND if you play your cards right, you might be able to convince your parents to help you out on this.
1. Don't tell them you want to mod your Xbox.
2. Go to your local library and pick up a "1001 Basic Electronics Projects" type of book. Take it home. Read it.
3. Leave it around where you mum and dad can trip over it, where it needs to be picked up off the kitchen table before dinner, etc.
4. Wait for them to ask - but then tell them that this is really interesting stuff, and you think you can LEARN something from this (reality is, that it IS really interesting, and you CAN learn from it).
Ask them if they can buy you a basic soldering iron, and some parts (look at the plan in the book - pick an easy project ... an LED flasher, "knight rider" led strobe are easy to start with). Move onto cooler things as you gain experience.
Reading a circuit diagram is all about knowing the symbols - as a musician (or at least someone that plays the trumpet

) - you are at an advantage. Reading music requires abstract thought - so does reading scematics.
Its educational AND a hobby --- what parent can complain about that?
