The iHas drive is recommended for burning XGD3 games, correct? What happens if you dont use the ihas drive and burn an XGD3, will you be able to play the game offline and wouldnt work online? And for non XGD3 games I could burn any game on any disc drive and it would be able to play online and offline, correct?

truncated backups are not supported,if you dont use a ihas rev b burner it will fail civ checks, even if you just use it offline, then connect to live the civ fail will be logged

Remember when you truncate a disk you are missing a percentage of the image from the game and it could well contain data that the game needs to run.

Exactly correct, but bear in min, i dnt think truncated dvds are supported on lt3.0

so basically
LT3.0 + XGD3 game not burned with an ihas = not safe online
Lt3.0 + non xgd3 + topology + running it in abgx = safe online + offline
hope i helped
Edit: might just buy an ihas after all, you know they're only 30-50$ or so

Well, although I agree to buying a iHAS other than the other cross-flashable drives, if C4EVA says these drives can be crossflashed, who are we to argue?
They can be crossflashed simply because they have the same/similar compatible chipset to the iHAS rev B pcbs.

I would not even shop for an iHAS, unless it actually specifies its the B revision (which will not be too cheap). I have 2 of these drives, I got them as soon as I knew what I needed to buy. No, my second one is not for sale, its my backup.

I have a DVD drive from an HP desktop system labeled DH-16ABSH. I wonder if this is an OEM drive and the HP just means it was sold by HP? I guess I could just try flashing it, but I hate to waste a drive if it isn't going to work.

Check the burnermax payload tool compatibility list(Does what the firmware does, on alot of other drives, and it is software, so no flashing any drive but the 1 in your xbox). you may already have a drive that is compatible with burnermax, which saves you the trouble of buying a new drive, or if you do, may save you the trouble of having to buy a Ihas drive. http://team-xecuter.com/forums/showthread.php?t=97292

I am getting a lot of conflicting information on what drives will overburn and which ones won't. I specifically asked about the Sony 5280s-cb because there is a ton of them on eBay much cheaper than the iHas B models. If you tell me that a Sony 5280s-cb will burn overburn XGD3 images, I'll order it today. As a VIP Member, you have that kind of clout.

Thanks!

Well I got my Optiarc AD-5280S installed, but it looks like doesn't seem to support overburn. The model number on the drive label states -CB, but ImgBurn shows just AD-5280S 1.Z8.

ImgBurn 2.5.0.0

UPDATE: Tried ImgBurn 2.5.8.0 - Same results. Sending BurnerMAX Payload reports unsupported drive (which I shouldn't need to do anyway). Can't find a Force HT setting in 2.5.8.0. I suspect it is a media issue, but I got a couple DVD's from a buddy who is using them with success on an iHas drive. So maybe that's not the case.

If there was only a way to somehow copy an ISO file to my XBOX. Every time I buy a new game, I create an ISO of the disc in case I scratch, break, or lose the original. So I have ISO files of all my games, but to reinstall them back on my XBOX, I have to burn them then use FSD to copy them to the hard drive. Seems like a pointless endeavor.

why not just use your original for the one time copy to your xbox hard drive?

For the particular game I'm trying to put back, I did. That was a couple years ago. For some reason, the game no longer starts from the hard drive. It loads the title screen and then stops without error. Never finishes loading. I figure the game got corrupted on the hard drive. Maybe a bad sector or something. Anyway, the original disc is packed away somewhere in the back of a huge shop building behind my house. I tried digging around for it, but haven't located it yet. In the meantime, I do have an ISO of the original disc on my SAN array, so I intended to use that to reinstall the game.

There must be an application for FSD (et. al.) that would allow me to "mount" an ISO and treat it like a DVD. Much like UltraISO or Slysoft Virtual CD. Maybe I'll go search that out.

I'm just disappointed the 5280S-CB didn't work as expected.
