LITEON DG-16D4S - SLIM Do I need to flash?

I got the kids a 360 for Christmas and want to backup our games since they are very hard on them. I have ordered a Sony 5280-S CB Plus to burn and a DG-16D4S to use strictly on the PC to read for ripping. I found where I will be buying the x360usb pro from and need a little info to make sure I get everything I need when I order and to know how to do it properly. I've been doing a lot of research the last few days and there doesn't seem to be any newer tutorials that show a start to finish for this. At least not that are easy to find. Plenty of bits and pieces to the whole puzzle, so to speak.

1) Will I need to flash the 16D4S drive if it is being used solely on the PC to rip?

2) If yes, what FW, 0800, or is there something different I should look for?

3) If yes to flash, do I need a probe for it and which one? (I'm assuming the Sputnik)

4) With this set-up, will I still need to flash the drive in the xbox itself to play the backups?

5) If yes, will I need a probe to do it? I haven't opened it up yet, but the mfg date is 3-25-2013 if that even helps at all.

Just looking for the easiest way to play backups of our games to protect our investment. I hope I gave enough info to answer the questions.

Thanks for any and all help.

1) Will I need to flash the 16D4S drive if it is being used solely on the PC to rip? I'm honestly not sure about the USB Pro V1, but with the USB Pro V2 you dont have to. You may have to do it with the V1 though, hopefully someone else can follow up.

2) If yes, what FW, 0800, or is there something different I should look for? 0800 would be the ripping firmware, yes.

3) If yes to flash, do I need a probe for it and which one? (I'm assuming the Sputnik) It depends on whether you have a Winbond (which requires a kamikaze hack) or a MXIC (in which case you would need the probe).

4) With this set-up, will I still need to flash the drive in the xbox itself to play the backups? Yes.

5) If yes, will I need a probe to do it? I haven't opened it up yet, but the mfg date is 3-25-2013 if that even helps at all. If you have a 2013 xbox you will not be able to flash it. You will need to order a replacement PCB for your brand of drive (Liteon or Hitachi) and flash LTU 2 to it.

I will add, if you only care about backing up your games and dont care about getting on xbox live, look into RGH. You can back up your games to a hard drive and avoid discs altogether. You will lose the ability to play on XBL though.

Thanks for the advice so far Brock, I will do some more looking into things. I read somewhere that the USB Pro V1 with a CK3 will do the exact same as a V2. Hopefully that is correct info. As far as XBL, I would really like to keep that function for my own gaming so at least for now the RGH is not an option. Maybe I would be better off getting an additional drive that is flash-able to swap out the original in the xbox instead of trying to unlock it with a new pcb. Any thoughts on that idea?

Game_Over, I looked at the pdf, but it doesn't really answer the questions I asked. Not trying to be a d**k, but if you don't want to help and answer questions by answering with "go read a 276 page manual", why waste the time and effort replying at all? I asked very direct questions in the "NOOB" forum that aren't explained in the "how to use this software" manual.

If anyone else has more helpful info, I'd love to hear it.

Thank you Game_Over, that is usable info. I'm not afraid of reading the manual, but I am an avid supporter of "work smarter, not harder". If I can take 2 min and ask here instead of 45 min to read through a manual I am not actually following at the time to possibly miss something, which do you think is smarter? Again, I appreciate the help this time. I now know I don't need to flash the 16D4S to use it strictly as a reader for ripping. Info that I did not see in the manual.

If I get a flashable drive (with a replacement PCB) to swap in it, then if for some reason I need to send it in for repairs, I can put the original drive back in and it's still under warranty (sort of). Yes, I know I need to keep the warranty sticker intact in order to do this. Any recommendations on what model drive would be best, or easiest to use for this?

I know the mfg's do this to prevent illegal copying, I just wish they would spend half the effort into making a way to play your own backups you legally own. And yes, it is legal to own your own backup no matter what they say. Maybe write an individual serial number in the code of each disc you can verify online and only play the backup that matches the disc you registered that you own. Or something along those lines.

I don't think there is a 0800fw for the 16d4s if u r going to use the USB pro v1. U can use a liteon 16d2s or benq drive for ripping your games.

After doing some more research I have come across something I HOPE someone can prove different. I the Hitachi drive in the new slim so I'm assuming it is 05xx FW. Still haven't cracked the case so I don't know what version, but at this point I don't think it really matters.
What I found is that it appears I can't retrieve the DVD key from this without RGH'n the MB which I really don't want to have to do.
Is this the case? Or will it work without retrieving the key if I use an unlocked board flashed with LTU 2 on the drive?

You would have to rgh to get key and then flash and use a replacement pcb (ltu2.1)

Thanks for the advice Game_Over. I can do it myself, just didn't want to have to do it. Like I said earlier, I was just looking for a way to play backups of my games so when my kids scratch them beyond playable I can burn another and have them back up and going.

So my next question is, if I RGH it to get the key will I still be able to get on XBL? If not I may just start looking for an older unit that is easier to mod for backups, that I really don't even care if it gets banned since it would only be for the kids.

That is the best news I've gotten so far in all this mystery unraveling I've done so far. Unfortunately, it still means I have to RGH initially to get it there. I will look into the alternate options you mentioned.
Do you by chance know where I could find a good tutorial on how to set it up and rip them to the HDD properly as to (hopefully) not get banned?

To be more specific, is there anything during or after the RGH install, or special about ripping to the HDD I need to know. I have looked at the RGH tut's, just want to make sure they apply to playing from HDD rips also.
