Do I need to update to play new games?

Hi,
last time I used my Switch was Decembre 2018.
My switch has firmware 6.0.0 and sx os 1.9.
Now I would like to download and play Crash Team Racing.
I downloaded an XCI file, an NSP file, and none of them work.

Maybe, to play new games, I have to update firmware and/or sx os?

you do need to update the firmware and sxos. check out choidujournx to update the FW.

Crash Team Racing for sure requires 8.0.1 for the base game while the latest update will ask for 8.1.0
You might consider using EmuNand to keep your sysnand to a lower version (works like a charm for me).
