Idle hands are the devils playthings... or playground.

Well... same thing that g$$$ said...

To tell the truth... I just really love networking! That's what I do all day. I build networks, tear them down.. and build them again!

It's truely one of those jobs where I love what I do and I'm lucky enough to get paid for it too!!

Not quite..

It'll just be something else with your name on it which has become [a] 'sticky'...

Well I say the post was not entirely a waste of time as it helped me get my dash onto my xbox. One question I have is. After switching all those IP's around I found I was able to FTP but my internet access no longer worked until I switched my PC's IP back to automatic. Is this unusual or did I fumble a step somewhere?

If you only have the one network card then this is exactly what would happen.

You would need to reconfigure it each time you changed from Xbox to Internet.

Absolutely not. If you only have a modem, then you would either need a separate router to do the both. If you already have a router, then you can connect the three to communicate with each other.

A router can be used with ANY network connection once configured correctly.

Connect your college internet connection into the WAN socket on the router. Configure it to a different subnet to the internet connection itself. Either leave the Xbox and PC as DHCP, or assign them addresses and gateways into the same subnet.

Most of what Martin said to do the Router will do automatically. If you have a linksys router, which is the most common, it will run a protocal called Network Address Translation which will allow you to run multiple systems on one ethernet connection.

When you get one of these routers you pretty much have to just plug it in like Martin said. Your WAN port is what goes out to the internet... via your cable modem or DSL connection and your other four ports are for your PC, Xbox or whatever.

Once you get that hooked up you can set-up your router with a uniqie IP address and some other good security features. It's pretty strainght forward.
