I kindof accedentely formated the old harddrive trying to get the new one ready. i have other xbox harddrives of other versions, and my brother has a modded xbox(older version). Can i use one of thouse. or will i need to find the files from another v1.6 hard drive?

I think you can copy the contents off an old one so long as it's unlocked. Then FTP it onto the buggered one.
