this is a fairly old thread but i would like to let everyone know that the problem was simply an unplugged sata cable. there was no laser problems.
my friend got status code 397F - 3CD6 - 1380 - 0700 - C000 - 000E during an update which signified that the dvd drive was not connected. after which i opened his xbox, connected the cable, and all was well.
