Dual NAND system with mismatched NAND types

Hey,

I'm thinking about soldering a piggy-back NAND in my RGH system. The original nand is a ST Micro NAND128 variant but I only have the Hynix variety (hy27us08281a). According to their respective datasheets they appear to be signal and pin-compatible. However, before I actually spend the time to do the install - does anyone know if this will work? Since the machines were built with either the ST Micro or Hynix variety I imagine the NAND controller circuitry is identical between the two but theres always the possibility that the system is looking for a specific NAND id.

Thanks,
Borchev

I can't see a reason it wouldn't work. Although I suggest you try to find a Demon. It will be easier to install and you won't have to cut any traces.

Thanks alot guys! My motivation against using a demon is purely just not wanting to shell out the money. I have a couple extra NANDs so I thought I may as well do it without unnecessary cost. I have no problem soldering them in and repairing traces so I'm good on that front. I was just worried the system would check the NAND type on boot and refuse to go any further.

To be completely honest I also have a bit of a bad feeling about the way the demon switches between NANDs. From what I've read - the demon doesnt require the CE line to be cut from the original NAND. I have to assume it must be overloading a transistor gate to drive the CE of the original NAND high when the secondary NAND is used.

I dont know how it works exactly, I just install them, but it has some really nice features(easy nand RW, uart, SB reset, etc), and I have had 1 in my xbox for over a year and have yet to have any problems,
