Ok, First of all, props for wanting to do it yourself and actually researching before you start soldering your MOBO... you're now 1 step ahead of half the people who try and mod.

You're going to want an X3 CE... it's going to be a solder install with about 16 or so solder points...

It's a pretty easy install. This is what you should do.

Go get a 15 watt soldering iron with a pretty narrow tip, some resin core solder and a old sound, video or network card.

Get some paperclips and start soldering them into the card. Read every tut and post you can on soldering... look on the net for soldering vid's and tut's

Once you know how to solder, take another week or so to learn how to solder... again...

Ok, your ready to solder... take about 1 more week and learn how to solder...

Ok, buy the chip... practice soldering while you wait for the chip.

Now install the chip. Read the tut's on the home page... load a bios... load a dash... impress your brother.. go have a coke and a smile.

Thank Catalyst.;)

I'm not going to quote the whole post but just wanted to aggree with it and provide some of my own EXPERIENCES
MY first mod did NOT go so well I used A 30 watt iron and just melted the MOBO to A point where I had to use the wires and after about 10 hours realized the ONLY reason the damn thing was fraging in the first place was cause I tried to use bios#1959 I did not bother to read the part about using 1959_V16plus The point is MY second Thid fourth etc... install I did ALL THE READING I COULD and invested the ten bucks on A cheap 15 watt iron and every install since then has gone smooth like A babby's but (Pic's below if your interested once you've gone mod you won't stop modding)
SO in conclusion I'd like to say (as Catalyst already kinda did) before you start READ!!! when you get EXHUASTED of reading READ SOME MORE, THEN go ahead good luck and god's speed
P.S
The only dumb question is the one you didn't ask

Solderless adapters are now available for most chips. They can be handy for people who are not willing to give their xbox to an installer, but dont know how to solder themselves. They work just as well as a soldered mod in most cases, but are more expensive. They also require just as much reading before hand. Many people screw up the install of a solderless adapter.

And since your at a team executer Forum, i would probably be commiting suicide for telling you anything other than to go with the X3's solderless Xapt3r.

(but seriously, it's made by team x so it IS excellent quality)

Now that i've said all that... I'll also say this. I don't like solderless adapters  :p

Hey, remember that one time when we were all posting on this board and you were all like "What should I do" and we all said "Dude, you should read!!"

Yeah... welll this is the "you should read" part.;)

Solderless is for whimps... but if you wanna go that way, just have your mom pack you a lunch before you start:rolleyes:

You don't "need" the control panel... it's just for kicks. Bios depends on xbox version. The latest is 3283 and 3284... read the homepage.

Good luck!

I have not experianced solderless on the X3's, but it's a pretty smooth process on Xeniums, expect it to be just as smooth if not smoother with a higher quality product. But for solderless installs you have to be sure you haev the correct version xbox, as solderless adapters are version specific. May I direct you to this for more info on finding out the version http://xbox-scene.com/versions.php Apparently the Xenium SP solderless adapter for the 1.6's works on the X3 CE according to xbox-scene, so if you want to go solderless with a 1.6 that SHOULD work, according to this at least http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/sep/EEEyEZFuuAlrqwwCao.php
aside from the install, since you're set down the solderless path already, is the software. When you hear usual places, people 90% of the time mean xbins. If it isn't clear what it is, it's an IRC channel... Once you know your way around there, you can pretty much get your bios, dashboard, and apps quick and easy. Loads of choices when it comes to dashboard, most other software is extra or just plain cool XBMC, loads of emulators, dvd2xbox the possibilities are endless. That X3CP is gonna look WAY cool, but if given the choice I'd conserve money get the Pro switch and a larger Hard drive.

One link is all any noobie needs when modding your Xbox- www.teamxecuter.com
Clearly you already know it as your in it! But just go to the home page and check all the guides!
The online stores links are very useful for ordering your gear. But yes all the a true noob really needs is:
-Xap3r(solderless adapter for the modchip)
-Xecuter 3CE
-A bigger hard drive than that sh*tty standard one
-(optional only for those who want to show off) the control pannel at fron with LCD!
