You can try onboard/VIA SATA but they aren't very compatible which is why an X360USB Pro is recommended. Follow this thread and select your drive, it will explain how to dump the drive key/dummy.bin.

I have a Slim Liteon DG-164DS / 0225 fw... I was able to dump my drive my drive with just:

a usb to sata/ide cable and a via card...

I wouldn't say lucky, it's just another way to do it...

It suprises you?

Try it out yourself..

Connect the usb to sata/ide cable to the usb port in the back of your 360. Plug a sata cable into your 360 dvd drive and the other end to the usb cable. Turn on your xbox and then open and close the tray 2 times. Immediately after closing the tray the 2nd time, unplug the sata cable from the USB cable and into your Via card.

It's really easy to do.. It works every time.

Funny thing is, I've NEVER had to power cycle my drive.

It's extremely easy to dump the files on this drive, nothing hard about it at all.
