Just need some conforimation on my thinking.

A friend gave me his xbox to update to the latest dashboard and the drive inside was a Samsung MS28 which when connected to JF shows as a spoofed Liteon. (someone else has previously flashed it for him)

Am I right in thinking that once updated, the drive would not play XGD3 games and show a E66 error? Should I tell my friend to buy a replacement Liteon so that I can put that in there allowing him to play the latest games?

The trouble with the latest firmware is that, as far as I tried, you cannot play XGD3 games written with an ordinary burner(truncate method)

not on a spoofed drive it wont amit. truncated is going to give e66 just the same since this is an issue with the wrong drive model and nothing to do with firmware
Sorry my bad , i didn't read the OP carefully  ,I thought Sammy is the default drive of this console .

To OP - as garageinc said you should go for a Lite-On DG16D2S Drive .

Sorry, 1 more question. The Samsung was spoofed as:

PLDS DG-16D2S 7485

Will it be ok to use a drive that shows up on JF as:

PLDS DG-16D2S 0251

All Lite-On drives were upgraded to 0251 firmware so it will be fine.
