Mere months after laying off staff at its Los Angeles and Danger Close studios as part of the "complex and challenging" console transition, EA has announced a new DICE studio based in the city, which will work primarily on Star Wars games. The publisher acquired exclusive rights to create Star Wars adaptations from Disney earlier this month - DICE, BioWare and Visceral are among the individual teams who will work with the IP. According to the Wall Street Journal (via VG247) the aim with LA DICE is partly to "poach talent from rivals like Activision Blizzard".
DICE's general manager Karl-Magnus Troedsson told the paper that "there is an extreme talent pool over that we want a part of. It's no secret that our main competitor is there." Both Treyarch and Infinity Ward - developers of the Call of Duty series - are based in Los Angeles, along with literally every other developer in the entire universe.
DICE LA hopes to add 60 staff by the end of 2013 - among its current employees are veterans of the ill-fated Medal of Honor. According to Troedsson, EA may develop brand new Star Wars stories rather than simply expanding on existing canon.
Update - Just spotted the below over on DICE's site. Ooh, showy.
