Didnt know where else to post this, but what is an EEPROM? Is it like some way to identify your xbox?

Electronically Eraseable and Programmable Read Only Memory.... It does in a way act like a serial number when logging on to xbox live... Apparently they log your eeprom and hard drive serial number when you log on to live.....

EEPROM

EEPROM (electrically erasable programmable read-only memory) is user-modifiable read-only memory (ROM) that can be erased and reprogrammed (written to) repeatedly through the application of higher than normal electrical voltage. Unlike EPROM chips, EEPROMs do not need to be removed from the computer to be modified. However, an EEPROM chip has to be erased and reprogrammed in its entirety, not selectively. It also has a limited life - that is, the number of times it can be reprogrammed is limited to tens or hundreds of thousands of times. In an EEPROM that is frequently reprogrammed while the computer is in use, the life of the EEPROM can be an important design consideration.
A special form of EEPROM is flash memory, which uses normal PC voltages for erasure and reprogramming.

EEPROM Last modified: Tuesday, July 29, 2003

Pronounced double-ee-prom or e-e-prom, short for electrically erasable programmable read-only memory. EEPROM is a special type of PROM that can be erased by exposing it to an electrical charge. Like other types of PROM, EEPROM retains its contents even when the power is turned off. Also like other types of ROM, EEPROM is not as fast as RAM.
EEPROM is similar to flash memory (sometimes called flash EEPROM). The principal difference is that EEPROM requires data to be written or erased one byte at a time whereas flash memory allows data to be written or erased in blocks. This makes flash memory faster.

ok, now there is a good deffinition out of the way. I am confused about how eeprom is relavant to the xbox. You say it contains the "serial" numbers for the xbox? Under what circumstances do you need to replace it?

If you get banned from xbox live...You can purchase or use another eeprom to make xbox live think you have a new box...Usually you have to use a new harddrive too!!
