So from what i have been reading it IS or ISNT possible to swap out the standard harddrive while still being able to connect to xbox live by "locking" the harddrive and swapping the EEPROMS...

Keep in mind i have ALREADY connected to xbox live with my xbox.

Am i right? Is this possible? Also if i do mod the xbox and put custom content on my new hard drive...aka like emulators and homebrew games and backup games...when i disable the modchip and lock the harddrive...will i still be able to connect to xbox live? Will it be like a standard xbox then?

You will need to replace your current EEPROM should you want to install a bigger HDD.

Your current HDD is married to your current EEPROM. Any change will result in a ban.

Once the chip is disabled, you'll be running a standard Xbox.

Will I still be banned if i create a new gamertag? I mean if i replace the hard drive and create a new xbox live account, with out purchasing a new EEPROM...will it still know that i swapped drives? Cuz right now i am using my 2 month free trial and i could easily create another account on it.

Yes it will - your EEPROM is now registered on Xbox live with the current HDD. Even under a different gamertag you'll be banned as the EEPROM/HDD details will be different.

Thats a very intresting point. As a complete newbie who has just modded (2.6CE) I as most must, was beginning to think about upping the HDD. I have not seen a single mention of this need to replace EEPROM also if you already have XBL account. I know you do now, I'm not doubting your knowledge, but I'm just highlighting the point that this significant risk tends not to be in the guides on this and other sites wrt HDD upgrades.

Thx MR C. Thats top info as always. Apols if it sounded like a 'moan' from me - it was just a suggestion for faq folks around. With a newbies fresh memory still with me I know what the new guys need:-
FAQ 1 - whats it all about then
FAQ 2 - how to obtain, fit, and flash a chip
FAQ 3 - how to obtain and 'load' the software, e.g. evox
FAQ4 - the greed kicks in and you want more - a bigger HDD e.g.

I was just giving advise as you were :)

Modding an Xbox is an education - anyone jumping into it without reading the (now plentiful) literature deserves everything that comes to 'em.

Go back 18 months and I'd say a third of the info now was available then. If someone really doesn't want to learn or read, then fine - just don't complain when something goes wrong.

Once you do learn what's what (and that only comes through reading and experience), the Xbox mod scene is far more enjoyable!
