Every single thing I install requires an update to run.

If you updated your firmware recently that is most likely why. you'll need to get the updates or go back to whatever firmware you were on when they worked.

Correct. I am somewhat guessing here, but there are most likely flags in FWs that check for certain things in games to see what version of the game is being run.
