External HDD Problems

Hey all,

I just bought my first RGH, and I've tried for the last couple days to get my RGH box to recognize my external hard drive. Needless to say, I've had no luck. It's formatted as FAT32 and it's smaller than 2TB, so I don't see where the problem is.

Can anyone tell me what I might be doing wrong? Is there some kind of external hard drive tutorial available?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

What i do is boot the console into the microsoft dash and format the hdd with the xbox itself

If your dashlaunch is set up the same you can get to microsoft dash by holding RB button while booting or exiting a game

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I've had no trouble formatting the drive with the Xbox itself. The problem is that I'm not trying to save anything to the external drive, I'm trying to run stuff off of it (mostly games of mine that I've turned into isos).

Install FSD and convert the isos to GOD. Google FSD and iso2god. This is a good tutorial on how to use iso2god, [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_haj1aPZH0"]How to: ISO2GOD - Installation + Conversion - YouTube[/ame]

EDIT: Typed at the same time as DBTarmac

I think I understand how to convert the iso to GOD, etc. The bigger problem is that as soon as I put anything on my external hard drive, and put it into my RGH box, the external isn't recognized. So I was wondering if my hard drive isn't properly formatted.

The tricky thing is, I can get my box to recognize the external, but only when it's newly formatted. As soon as I stick anything on the drive, put it back into my RGH, it is no longer recognized. It's very strange. It's about half a TB, so the problem isn't the size, but it might possibly be some other kind of hardware issue?

Or maybe I'm just not understanding something properly? I thought I was supposed to format from my computer, but perhaps I need to format it on my Xbox?

A galaxy far far away....
using god format is not your only option, you can extract your iso's instead

create a directory on the root of your external and name it Game

set your scan path in FSD to usb0:\Game

extract your .iso with xbox image browser to the game directory (delete the $systemupdate folder that was extracted)

for example

usb0:\Game\Max Payne 3

scan depth of 3 is fine

try this

Code:
1) Install Easeus Partition Manager Home Edition

2) Hook your hard drive up to a usb port on your PC and make a note of the drive letter

3) Run Easeus partition manager

4) Select your hard drive by the letter you noted earlier and right click on it then select delete and then ok. (Be sure it is the correct drive as it will be deleted!)

5) Your hard drive should now be showing as unallocated

6) Right click on your unallocated partition and select create, you should now have these options:

* Partition label : xbox - (can be named whatever you like)

* Create as : Primary

* Drive letter : X - (can be anything you like)

* File system : Fat32

* Cluster size - (This will be set automatically)

7) Size and position

It should automatically be set like this:

* Unallocated space should be 0

* Partition size should be whatever the size of the drive is

* Unallocated space after should be 0

* Click ok

8) Set drive as active

* Right click your hard drive

* Set active

* Click ok

9) Format

* Navigate to the top left corner under the view tab and click apply

* Click yes on the pop up window

* Several seconds/minutes later you should get a pop up saying the operation has been successful

* Click ok and then exit the program, your drive has been formatted.
edit: on a side note after reading your replies again it almost sounds like you do not know where to put your content, i suggest that you install freestyle dash and head over to teamfsd.com and do some reading

How are you formatting the external HDD to FAT32? I always use a utility like SwissKnife to do it properly. Maybe it is getting formatted as an exFAT volume by Windows?

No format the ExHDD with the Xbox 360 itself as i myself have experienced problems using the pc to format the ExHDD. I always recommend that you format with the Xbox 360 with all due respect to nfidel

I formatted it with guiformat. I've checked the drive in Disc Management, and it appears the the ExHDD is in FAT32.

I'm going to try formatting from the Xbox, see how that goes. But please keep the suggestions coming. Everything I've tried so far hasn't worked, any advice whatsoever is greatly appreciated.

EDIT: Good news, my box is finally reading and recognizing my ExHDD. Thanks to everyone who offered assistance, you were all a huge help.

I Had similar problem,

I use 1TB External hard disk for keeping my 200GB games in a folder named "GAMEZ", Freestyle dash was not able to import my games into the FSD games folder, I have added the folder GAMEZ in the content of FSD, but nothing is scanned,

Finally, FSD was able scan the games in my external hard disk by moving my games into the folder X:\Content\0000000000000000 (16zeros) in the same 1TB external hard disk, and add this folder to FSD content and then scan ...
