You say the blue light works, but the external switch doesn't. Are you saying blue light on the chip itself? Or on the external switch that you say doesn't work. If you mean on the chip itself, there should be two blue lights, one for 3.3v, and one for 5v. Are both of those lit up?

if the lights on the chip isn't working, look at the pins. they can get easily bent.
i had the same prob with my pro switch. after figuring out it asn't the cable. i looked a the pins.

it might also be pins 9 & 15(3.3v) . to check 2 blue leds should be on on the x3 chip

ok one of the blue leds is on the x3 chip and the pins dont look bent
There are 2 blue LEDs on the X3 that should be on if everything is soldered on correctly.

If pins 9 and 15 were connected correctly you would have 2 led's on the chip. since you don't have 2 led's guess what....their not connected correctly. Try resoldering them or connecting them with a wire. also what version xbox do you have?

your problem plain and simple is your soldering isn't good enough. either pins 9 and 15 aren't getting a proper connection or your screwing up with the alt 5v
