Do I have to extract the ss.bin file with my 360 drive? Or can I just extract it from the ripped iso using xbox backup creator or ss merger 1.7b?

Edit: also, is it normal for the *.dvd file to be ~20 bytes?

Assuming you have a Kreon flashed DVD drive, you do not need to use your xbox DVD to backup your disks. Have a look at the section in the guide about making backups for more info;

I'm actually using wxripper and the hotswap method to burn my games. I've tried extracting the ss from the image after ripping it and the numbers always match in ss merger (though the field is still red) Does this work? If not, where can I get a kreon drive? I've checked all of the computer stores around here and none of them have any.

You cannot extract the ss from a WxRipper image. The ss can only be extracted using an Xbox 360 drive connected to your PC or with a Kreon drive.

Search ebay for 'kreon'.
