I'm considering buying a factory refurb xbox to mod and was wondering if they change out the MB or anything when rebuilding them. If a broken xbox goes in as a version 1.0, does it come out a 1.0 or is it updated? Anyone know?

It depends on what's broken. Most likely it will remain whatever version it came as.

gamestop.com advertises as having them ready to ship in 24 hours. I just don't want to buy one and get a V1.0 that may still have problems. I just bought a POS from ebay that had a much bigger problem than the guy stated and it was a V1.0 as well. Anyone have a good V1.2-1.5 MB only they want to sell?
My bud bought one the other day and it was an old 1.1 version...everything worked fine except for the power to fan on the motherboard...I was pissed...had to order an adapter from llama.com
It really surprises me that so many people will go out and buy a refurbished Xbox, but hesitate to pick one up from a local pawn shop. I am now up to the 12th unit I have picked up for people at pawn shops. I always take a game to check everything out before I buy. Heck a few of the shops I have bought from even have a 7 day refund if the item does go bad. To date I have modded all the boxes and not one has had a problem. Units I picked up averaged $85 bux.

I got my xbox refurbished. It was a 1.0. but they gave me a new dvd rom drive. Apparently the crappy drive got the boot. It works great.

Talk to the folks at the pawn shops too. It is like Let's Make A Deal. They are buying the systems for like 10 bux and marking up big time. Try to talk them down on the price. Sometimes you can...sometimes you can't but I always try.
I got my first xbox from gamestop.com and only payed around $150 for it, but it came with 10 games. anyways it was a 1.4 with a samsung, everything has worked perfectly and have had no problems.
