OK been out of the game a good while, like to keep my toes dipped though.

have a console here with no dvd key, repair from a long time ago.

never even looked at install instructions before yesterday, so quickly installed nand-x QSB and coolrunner.

all ok

dumped nand = no problems, no bad blocks etc etc.

used coolshrimps jtag tool

injected ecc, all done, removed all external cables, and turn 360 on to boot xell (i only want the dvd key)

nothing, just a red light (pulsing on the coolrunner)

no green light at all.

checked and triple checked wiring.., new it was spot on, been soldering for 15+ years anything from kynar15awg to 128 pin TSOPS

anyway, double and triple checked, resoldered, moved wires, unravelled, made sure no crosstalk, still the same.

lol

by pure chance i left the coolrunner plugged into the nand-x with the usb cable attached to my PC and BAM, green flash...............

plugged av cable in, and straight into xell , rebooted lots of times and boots into xell in one go, under 5 seconds.

got my dvd key, xbox on its way to being fixed.

just though i would post this here, all the tuts i followed simply said remove all cables and nand-x from coolrunner and power on console..............

stress gone lol.

Hi CM :)
Interesting post. Filed in the ol' noggin for future reference, things to try when everything else bends your mind. I seem to remember accidentally leaving mine plugged in a while back and it wouldn't boot at all or maybe went straight RROD.
LOL, the RGH gets more like witchcraft and less like science everyday.

At no point do you state that you changed the CR switch from PRG to NOR....

You did do it, right?

lol, yes of course. switch in either position prog or normal.

infact the funny thing is, ive got another falcom here now (my own) which ive done no problems.

the only thing is.

it will only glitch with the nand-x connected to the coolrunner.

and by connected i mean.

nand-x connected to the QSB = it glitchs fine.

remove nand-x = nothing, just the flashing red light but no video / audio output. coolrunner has no green light, just red which dims every 5 seconds or so.

360 has flashing green eject light.

the nand-x is not connected to pc either, just the 4 leads to coolrunner and mainboard.

once connected = happy days.

and yes, switchs tried in all positions.

once leads connected it glitchs in about 5 seconds, every time.

at the moment im in between this and a million other festive things, so will have a proper look later

LOL

excuse the flux in the piccys, they have been cleaned.

the QSB`s are the same fair, all checked with meter, i cant take some more if you like, but trust me the they are fine.

Anyway to elaborate.

ive updated dash to 604
took the dumps (took 8)
compared and no bad blocks
created ecc
wrote ecc
booted xell

got cpu and dvd key
made freeboot
put it on flash drive with rawflash, xell flashed it, jobs a good`un

reboots fine, glitchs fine.

but when i remove the nand-x black screen, no audio, flashing green light on front panel, and just red light on coolrunner. no green flash or anything.

this is with the switch on phat or slim.

switched to normal

switched to prog = same, but no red light on coolrunner.

the moment i plug nand -x back onto coolrunner, i get a green flash and it glitchs fine. i donot need the usb plugged into the nand-x, just the nand-x plugged into the coolrunner.

2 falcons and pretty much both the same?

Thanks in advance.

happened to me once... Dim red light...

Checking your grounding.... I would say its a ground issue, ie bad solder on ground or forgot to do it... Perhaps its not, but its what gave me a dim red light...

You've not shown any pics of the wires installed to the coolrunner....
bear with me

ground is fine, however this was my first though.......

regardless though even if it was a ground issue, just plugging the nand-x in, wouldnt solve this issue, as it works fine without the usb plugged in.......on paper anyway.

ok, ten mins, i shall be back.

ha ha, well i`m not so sure i was installing it incorrectly. However i have the solution.

It was an earth issue , as i first thought (thanks spookyman though)

earth between chassis and ground points intermittent, not so sure why, all screws are in the mainboard / chassis.

checked earth from QSB to earth on board, not so good. Checked connection between earth point on QSB and earth pad and it is indeed this which is the problem. I cannot see any damage, track is fine , but meter says otherwise.

I removed earth wire from QSB and soldered it directly to the shielding round network / usb connector.

coolrunner now has strong red light and glitchs in under 5 secs everytime.

Incidently, this is a recycled QSB from a previous install / repair so there is a little damage to the PCB from removal, however all points had been checked and there are a few points where track lifts slightly, but all points work fine, nand dumps fine etc etc. I still dont understand why it worked with nand-x connected even though it wasnt connected by USB, if it was i could understand as it would be earth to pc???

fook knows.......

the only point i didnt check was earth lol but hey, its christmas, trying to do this in between wrapping..................

heres photos anyway of soldering to coolrunner etc etc just to satisfy.

these dont show the new earth, took these before i resoldered...........

Im gonna put this down to a faulty QSB as it had exactly the same issue on first install.....

oh, and they aint pubes lol, its q-tip ;)

Confused about this I must say.,

The GND point on your coolrunner should be soldered to a good GND point anyway, like the metal chassis of the AV socket. Where did you have it going to?

Matey, you cant solder The ground of the glitching chip to the ground of the 12 pin header where you dump the nand/ place the blue wires.. That is a NAND/Processor ground... That really screws things up...

The ONLY ground that should be used is the metal chassis...

The reason why it worked when the nand x was plugged in (even with out usb) was because the ARM processor on the nand x has a good ground that is separate from the CPU/Nand

Those are some nice photo's how did you make them?

Paint na using a camera and taking close shots.
If I ever get stuck I got a nice £500 camera ready to take some HD shots :).

OK, festivities over. I will admit being rushed when doing this, and also doing a bit and putting it down, picking it , putting it down.

This is simply my bad, user error, bad install, whatever you want to call it.

i didnt look at the install diagrams properly, and did indeed solder the ground to the wrong point, it should of just been soldered to the shielding in the first place.

i knew it wasnt my soldering, but it was my lack of attention in the end.

strangley though, i still cannot understand why it worked with the nand-x plugged in, when even that wasnt earthed?

but regardless, hold my hand up, ultimatley it was my fault, im no novice installer, i just overlooked the install diagrams, after some sleep and sobriety , i came back to put it right lol.

And the piccys? i use a USB microscope, they where at 100x , the one i have does 200x and i have one that does 400x . great for checking, only about £20 now from ebay.

p.s.

heres a item number for the camera / microscope as a few people have pm`ed me .

ebay item no. 160701466732

they do a 400x one as well....................;)

i've edited your post as direct links to ebay are not allowed, but posting the item number is ok,;)
