Fan setting why can they be changed

I have just had my first client return, :mad2:
I sold this client a fully reconditioned XBOX360 Jasper yesterday, with CoolRunner installed (about my 80th install mind you)

I went thru all the setting, (including fan settings) with him on the HDD I had already setup for this system, he didn't want that HDD

Client wanted to use his own HDD (250gig) as he had a friend who had installed FSD and some games on it for him...
Some reason they left the fan settings on 25%.

THEY COOKED IT... RROD

My questions are:
1st why do they allow the setting to go that low...

2nd do you think I should take some of the blame for the outcome.

I also rang/emailed every client I had installed the CoolRunner into to inform them that fan setting are very important (most told me they always check them on a regular occurrence.)

You cannot possibly be blamed for this. Freestyle clearly warns of the risk of setting fan speed to low.

It would be something for the FSD Team to change within freestyle. But then again, this is a basic handling fault and the only one to blame is your client...

Thanks guys, I told him give me 24h to think how I was going to handle this problem.
I have just started pulling it apart and it does not look good.

If they've changed the fan settings outwith the stock console configuration, there's nothing you can do about that. Even if you had set the fans to 100% in the config, the moment FSD loads it would have overridden it.

Don't sweat it - nothing you can do about idiots.

i cant see running the xbox at low fan speed causing it to RROD within a few hours play, the console was oviously ready to RROD in the first place.

Actually, looking at the timeline I think n1ght0wl could be right. The console would have 2RL long before being cooked.

How long does it take to RRoD and what's the secondary code?

I test all the consoles I rebuild before and after rebuild them and this one was great... temps were perfect and console ran like a dream...
I like your thinking but the console was purched at 11.00am Friday - RROD was around 8.00pm sane day and him and his girlfriend had it on all day. also it had a cheap version of the intercooler on it...
(man I hate those things)

just checked it now and Error code 0012

but I am sure when I checked it this afternoon it was 0101

50% is standard ...i've put mine to 60% or it gets too hot
25% is cooking it

not sure if there's a difference between phat and slims though, mine's a slim

Are you definitely getting 3 red lights? Have you restored the stock NAND to see what happens?

Just did exactly that... still no good.:frown:

Have written up a how to look after a Jtag manual as well as a form that people need to sign before they get a Jtag installed.:mad2:

The guy is an idiot, but when looking at it from a customer standpoint it might look differently. I would fix the RROD but explain how to set fans etc.. Either way when dealing with many different people there's always going to be that one.:rolleyes2:

Just found out that clients girlfriend was playing the console when she saw the 2 red led’s flashing and left it going as she didn’t want to touch the console as it was not hers and her boyfriend was having a little lay down and didn’t want to wake him.

In her defense she told me she did stop playing the game and put the controller down.:rolleyes2:

Once you get 2RL the console shuts down anyway. It's overheat protection. Getting this once shouldn't cause any issues.
Well that may be the case, but its dead now and I have had to replaced it with another one.

Still dont understand why fan setting are able to be set so low.

Because some people like using bigger fans with slower RPM, so have no need for the stock fans to be running so loud.

If you use the latest FSD you cant set your fan speed below 65%, something to keep in mind.

Anyway, you shouldnt take the hit for this. Give the system back to your client and tell him to f-off.

I'd personally do a 50% blame look from customer is bee pissed too but you got to make a living
I disagree completely.

The OP provided a service and delivered a working product. The customer decided to modify that, not knowing what they were doing.

How is the OP any way responsible for that?

In the same way we're seeing pages upon pages of people f**king up their RGH install because they don't know what they're doing, it's not OUR responsibility.

If the OP just wants to keep the peace, that's up to them but personally he has no liability here.

Ignorance is not an excuse - if you don't understand something, don't f**k about with it. plain and simple.
