I read that some people disconnect the black wire and earth it to the board to give them 12v. Is this necessary on the x3 or does the bios setting enable you to put it up to 12v? Just installed 160gig hard drive so upped the speed to 60% for now and drilled a few holes in the side of the hard drive holder to enable a lil more airflow.

Some people do the 12v mod, but I'm not sure it's always necessary. With the X3 you can either set the fan to run faster (as you have done) or I think even set to act on different temps etc.

I'm looking at doing some sort of hdd cooling mod with some of the kits that are out there.

How many volts does it run at 100%? As that is pretty loud and could not imagine it much faster

Yeah I found a similar article on the Llama site .... they do a plug splitter that plugs into the hdd feed and gives a fan header but 12v - that way there is no messing around, you just plug it into that instead.

However - it will be very noisy and no different than setting it in the BIOS !
