I flashed my friends ms25 w/42 firmware, now he wants to upgrade to 52 b/c he gets the dirty disk errors. Textbooks tutorial said w/the hitachi drives you have to restore.bat back to the original firmware then flash w/ the new, but do you have to do that w/the ms25?? I though I could just 0800 the drive and once windows recognises it, cd from dos prompt into the right directory then run samhack from there?? So basically can I do this to update his firmware, and do I have to restore back to the original firmware before updating. Thx in advance.

but you have to samread first before samhack.

The only reason you need to samread is to create the directoru structure. Samhack is coded so that it will not work unless it detects that the original has been created (a safety measure)

Alternatively you can boot to DOS with youur XBM created USB key and type;
mtkflash w /m /sata x52x.bin

Notes:
- With Original MS25, you will need to create a 5.2 version which spoofs a MS25 to avoid the E66 error
- The above method will only work with VIA sata chipsets, failing that you will need to have the additional step of using the Enable disk
