which is the preferred method? Or am I worrying too much and I should just flash the damn thing and maybe get another beer?

FTP is easiest when you have the X3 BIOS installed and want to flash a non X3 BIOS.
Webflash is easiest and fastest when you have the X3 BIOS installed and want to reflash a new X3 BIOS to the same bank.
From FlashBIOS, HTTP is easiest.

it worked fine. i don't see the disable dvd on boot, but I'll look some more later. my wireless controller works fin if anyone is keeping track. It's an Eclipse PL-2006.
