Flash error message

I just finished installing my X3, and everything boots fine to the Flash BIOS. The dvd drive I have is sh*t, (Thompson) and I still have to fix it, so I decided to ftp to the drive. I don't see anywhere on the main screen where it has the ip address, and when I go to the network flash section it go's through some checks and I at the end says something about initializing tcp/ip and then hangs. Is that because I don't have the xbox connected to the pc yet? I believe I tried it before on my old xbox and it went to another screen.

You won't get an IP on the main screen.

When it "hangs" it's looking for a DHCP server to assign an IP address to it. Eventually it times out that process and assigns a static IP address (probably 192.168.0.99)
