I have a working X3CE that I flashed to 1959 on Jan. 20, 2005. I can boot to the m$ dash and I can boot to X3 Config Live. The chip is working and detected by X3 Config Live and will correctly identify and display which banks are selected and the build stored on the chip. I have tried to flash to 2913, 2914 and 3029. Each time I attempt flash I get "please remove flash protection and flash again" message. The chip flash protection is disabled (LED is RED), the pro switch is disabled(LED is RED). The two blue LED's light up. What causes the chip to think flash protection is on when it is not?

you said your led is red on the external switch? perhaps you should try doint it without your chip disabled.

have already tried that, doesnt flash with the chip disabled or enabled. Also doesn't work with the pro switch disconnected.

ive just been havin this prob...it seems the power button is alot more sensitive ont the 1.6 than my old 1.4, try holding the eject first then tapping the power button. it made it a little easier to boot to the backup flashbios.
Booting to the backup bios is not the problem. I can boot to 3.0.0 and I can boot to 3.0.1. I cannot get the new bios to flash from config live or from the backup bios as stated above.
yeah sorry,i wasnt very clear! you see.... its possible to boot to the backup bios(flashbios) with the chip disabled(red LED on xcuter logo on front original bank switch) now in this state you get the flashbios screen but the rom is locked so you cannot flash.
Im guessing that if you have the pro switch installed you no longer have the red/blue xecuter logo on the switch bank.
the only L.E.D's you want to be red are: the one on the chip itself inside the box, the one on your pro switch(you should see the LED on the chip itself change color when you switch the pro switch).
if the xecuter logo on the black switch bank is red it means the chip isnt on(but youcan still reach the flash bios screen). so to make sure that the chip is on AND you are in the flashbios, follow what i said in my last post.

So i held the eject and tapped the power button, Xecuter logo on pro switch is blue and "read only" is displayed on the 3.0.1 screen
ok, not quite sure....very odd.
Try removing your pro switch completly, it should default to flash on 1-4,
MAybe your pro switch has thrown a wobbler!
double check the red LED iis on the chip(switch in disabled pos)
And then try agian..at least you can rule out the pro switch being faulty or not.

Can you see the colour of the internal chip LED change inside when you operate the flash on/off button on your pro switch?
i can see the chip change color from red to green when pressing the external disable/enable switch. I have already tried disconnecting the pro switch as i stated in post #4.

Have you found an answer? I have the same problem, except my chip never has a red light, even with all the flash protection disabled.
i have similar problem...the bios i had flashed dissappeared and now the flashbios is on everybank and it wont let me flash any way ive tried and i know how to do it i have several xboxes with x threez in them and i put it in multiple boxes with same prob
