My buddy gave me his xbox that had problems with the dvd drive, which was thrown out, and I decided to try and fix it. I had some spare parts laying around so i grabbed a DVD drive and went to test the console. It works except that everything is either a DVD or needs to "be in an xbox 360". I figure I need to flash the DVD drive to work correctly with the console. How may I go about this, due to not having the old DVD drive anymore?

You will need to glitch the motherboard to retreive the dvd key. This is only possible on motherboards with hana chips. Xenon boards cannot be glitched

If you have his Xbox and Not the original dvd drive then your Stuck, To put another dvd drive in, you need Spoof it with the Original xbox key in order for it to play games, If you dont have the OFW from the Drive then you need get it.. You see the Dvd drive has a key that has to match the key to the Xbox, if it doesnt the xbox will only play Dvds and not games, You can out another Drive inside the xbox but you need to spoof the key onto the new drive, you need get the key or OFW from the xbox's original Drive, If you can't get it no more then your stuck, only thing you can do is if the xbox has the old dashboard, Jtag the xbox which will allow you get the Xbox key from the xbox and Not the dvd drive which will allow you spoof the key onto a drive, Put it in the xbox and get games working again

otherwise what would I be paying for a JTAG or am I just screwed and better off just dumping the old console?

EDIT: My board is a Zephyr

IDK How to determine my chip.
