This might be a really silly question...i have just successfully glitched a falcon (boots instantly may i add:cool2::eek:) and i am wondering now about flashing the drive as i already have the dvd key info..do i still need to go through the whole process to do it, ie unlocking drive if it would normally need doing etc, or can i just load up the firmware, spoof the key and write the drive ??

The Hitachi 79 needs unlocking before you can read/write to it.

JungleFlasher does 99% of the work for Hitachi drives to make sure things are done correctly (it selects the correct firmware based on the drive key's hex location in the OFW).

For the record, even though its obvious, RGH or Jtag does not alter your ability to launch your backup games or copy them to your rgh/jtag system. RGH is one thing and custom firmware is another.

As BL4K3Y said, its the same thing as if you were not on a RGH system, if its a 78/79 it will need the unlock cd to unlock. As Martin says, whats the point, you can copy your games to your system without the flashing as you should have your retail copy. If for some reason you do not have your retail copy, legally you should not obtain your backup copy, unless it is defective, in that case, you would flash your Hitachi under normal instruction as the JungleFlasher guide says you should.

Unlocking an Hitachi is not drastic like on Slim drives, its not really a problem, even people with limited access to devices such as X360USB Pro and CK3 can usually unlock an Hitachi quiet easily, its nothing like a Slim Kamikaze or even splicing on MXIC. Phat Hitachi, as well as all Phat DVD Drives are very easy to install custom firmware and really do not cost anything to do, of course getting a Key from a Liteon Phat you will need a Tx probe, or make you own kind of probe to get the key, but since your asking about Hitachi, its actually hacked without any special tools quiet easily.

And all the info on every drive is in the jf tutorial even a link to the 79 unlock cd

The link to the unlock CD is broken, i just googled it.... i have all the equipment to do EVERY drive, i have done many kamikaze and i also used to sell the kamikaze repair kits on ebay...still have stock of the MT133 chips, SPI chips and the quick solder boards for the SPI (if anyones interested in purchasing my stock LMK) ..and i have repaired many of them as well..anyway, i digress, i was merely trying to find out whether getting the DVD key via RGH would make the job of flashing the drive super quick and easy..i got the answer and i used my usbpro to do the job in no time from scratch

I know its a late reply, but the link to the unlock CD still works here. I just clicked it and was greeted with the download dialog and downloaded the small ISO file quickly.

The answer to that is NO. Performing a RGH (assuming you have a non xenon console with a Hitachi) is much more work than simply hooking up an Hitachi and using the unlock audio cd and reading then writing cfw.
Additionally, if your system is a xenon and updated beyond jtag ability, it will require R-JTAG which is expensive and more work, as said before, its much more easier, simpler and faster to simply follow the traditional methods to get your Hitachi to play your backups.
