Can you still use a VIA6421 SATA card to flash the drive? The tutorials that i have seen are shown using the X360USBPRO.

should be able to, just a lot easier (and more compatible) with the X360USBPRO.
the method is almost the same though

i never used to have problems flashing phat drives with my via card, apart from hitachi's which i used to use my onboard sata.

OP just make sure you got your via drivers uninstalled

And make sure you are not drawing power for the drive from the same cable as your main HD if using a desktop to flash.

As the 360 drive draws power to write the new firmware, it can freeze the pc because it accesses the hd at the same time.

And yes it has happened to me. Until i switch to a power connector on a different cable in my old desktop. Then the freezing stopped.

I am going to be using a Probe 3. I am just asking if I am going to need to have the tray open or whatever when flashing. I have some vids with it open and some with it not.

no need for tray open, it's not mentioned anywhere in the tutorial so it's not required :)
