Ok, here we go...

1.4/5 version xbox
x3 chip
1959 bios
stock samsung drive
evox dashboard

my games keep randomly freezing! it isn't always in the same spot!

things i've eliminated as the problem:
1. overheating...i checked the temp and it was fine but i turned the fan up anyways...this is not the problem
2. i just updated my bios to 1959 (it was 1959 before but i thought perhaps it was a bad flash so reflashed...still freezing)
3. the dates...i have updated all dates to the appropriate time
4. i have all those autosave feature things off like everyone tells you in the evox settings

What on earth is wrong with my xbox? (and is it true that you dont need any files in your cache folder or in x or y folder at all?) could it be the hd or perhaps a bad solder point?

HELP!!! PLEASE!!!

I dont ftp games to hd i burn them to verbatime dvd-r discs which i have not had problems with until recently...i dont believe it to be the discs at all because like i said it did it with nfl2k5 too which is store bought...

it really does sound like something overheating, probably the graphics

try turning the fan up more and also check your dvd drive for dust

yeah i'm starting to think it is as simple as the dvd drive being dirty or what not...i'm going to try running a cleaning disc and if that doesn't work disassembling it and manually cleaning it out...thanks for all the advice i'll let you know how my process of elimination goes!!!
(and of course it goes to sh*t just at the time i get time off of work for christmas!!! i swear it's a conspiracy!!!)

ok just to clarify for those who are worried my backup games are bought games....i was merely stating that some were burned and others were originals...i'm sorry that my wording was incorrect!!! thank you for the correction from those of you who were worried!

I'd say solder joint problem. Dry solder joint making partial connection ... as the box heats up, the properties of the joint changes, and you get your lockup.

ok i broke down and took everything apart to clean dvd drive and to check solder points...as i was checking i noticed my grey wire (d0 wire) was loose and eventually it just came off as i was untaping...do you guys think this may have been what was causing my problems all along? i never had any problem with my flashing led or anything...just wanting to make sure before i solder this one then leave the others...do you still think it may be a problem with the actual pin header soldering??

ok i've decided that it most likely is my dvd drive seeing as how i had problems running original copies of games with my x3 chip off...sooooo...where should I look for a replacement? Is ebay safe or is there a website that sells them fairly cheap that anyone knows of? Also, I hear that samsung are best but I had a samsung and it's faulty so any suggestions on make or model???

OK...just thought I'd post what I found...it was the d0 point that was causing me all the problems. I believe it was overheating originally and that's why it snapped off so easily when I untaped it. I stripped it down a bit and resoldered and haven't had any more problems since! Thanks to everyone for their input!

Sorry to start this thread up again but I too have these lockup problems.
D0 seems to be fine lockups occur from HDD or DVD, from either "backups" or original discs, and never in the same spot. Problem only occurs during game never in dashboard or XBMC for hours upon end. Even locks up in game demo. Upon reset GPU & CPU temps seem fine. What temp is too high for the GPU anyway?
It is a V1 with X3 of course which seems great and a samsung 160G which I run unlocked, should I lock it?
GPU fan is running so Im not sure what to think.
Ive read that the XBOX is glitchy and lockups are to be expected is this so or is it just narrow minded PS2 owners blowing off steam.

yeah you know how i said i fixed my xbox...yeah apparently it was only temporary...what the *&^%!!!! so basically i'm going to go in and probably have to unsolder everything and resolder again to make sure it's not a bad point...it's not overheating! i'm positive of that! other than this option i will have to get a new dvd drive i'm thinking!!! GRRRR!!!
