Fried my X3 :(

I wound up having to do a pin wire install because I got my XBox free from a friend, and he had, at one point, installed a mod chip, then removed it, so the LPC was anything but clean.

Everything was going great until I put the cover on. Somehow, while I was putting the cover on, the plastic cover that was over the Alt 5v came off and shorted out. Needless to say, my chip's dead. I can see the damage along the trace. I tried running a jumper, but the trace is damaged so badly, there are too many points to jump to.

So, is my only option at this point to buy a new chip, or is there somebody who is able to repair it for less than the price of a new chip? Thanks.

Just get a new chip.

And BTW, if the alt 5v wire contacted the mobo to fry your x3, you really should look at the mobo for damage.

If it still works perfectly, thats just weird.

It runs fine with the chip removed. What happened was part stupidity and part connecting the thing after working three 12 hour days in a row (which, I suppose, was stupid).

Since it was a wire install, I mounted the X3 on the side of the case with the sticky pad. When I put the cover on, it knocked the cover off the alt 5V wire, so it shorted on the shielding on the cover, not the motherboard.

I just wish there was a brick and mortar place near me that sold these. It was supposed to be a Christmas present for my son.

Well, I feel a little better. After getting some sleep last night, I woke up and took a closer look. The trace that was fried was the large trace running from the 5v on the pin header connector to the alt 5v, with many stops in between. With nothing to really lose, I took a piece of wire, wrapped one end around the alt 5v and touched the other to the 5v pin header solder point on the X3. I powered up and it actually worked.

Would soldering this jumper wire be sufficient or would I be best off following BLUEku's trace repair tutorial? Thanks.

Oh, and if anybody else reading this has done something similar, grab a piece of wire and give it a shot. You might just save yourself another $60.

Well, that will work for your chip.
From what you said before, I assumed multiple traces were dead instead of just one.

Also, if you're mounting the chip on the side of the Xbox because of the wire install, put some thicker tape on the back side of the chip to make sure that none of the metal pieces can poke through the tape and short something else.....

That's what I thought last night, but that was also after a 12 hour work day with about 5 hours of sleep the last two nights. :)

It's a single trace, but a big chunk of the trace is gone (it looks like about 25% of the trace from the pin headers to the alt 5v is either burnt or peeling off). It looks like I may have lost the 5v branch for the LCD connector, but I have no plans on hooking one up, so it'll be fine. If I decide on getting an LCD later, I'll be sure to order a new chip.

Also, if you're mounting the chip on the side of the Xbox because of the wire install, put some thicker tape on the back side of the chip to make sure that none of the metal pieces can poke through the tape and short something else.....
Good advice. I think I see what happened now, too. When I put the DVD back in, the plastic tray pressed up against the Alt 5v pin and bent it back. The plastic cover that was on it fell off, and the pin touched metal portion of the case. I suppose it could have been much, much worse.

Thanks for your advice.

Actually, I more or less did. <g>

I mostly just was curious if there was anything I could do with a burnt chip other than toss it.
