ok, here goes.
BOX 1) 1.6 w/ X3CE (red)
BOX 2) 1.6 w/X3

1) burned cdrw w/ phoenix bios (i think). it was some weird bios i hadnt heard of, i dl it off of xbins.

2) rebooted box1 w/o touching any switch settings (didnt realize i had to)

3) told it to flash main bios.

4) blank screen, didnt know what to do, researched online for a couple of hrs, decided to hot swap the next day, went to sleep.

5) next day, opened box2

6) 5v wire fell off, so i resoldered it
*note: in between all the swapping, the soldered 5v wire kept falling off , so i had to resolder a few times.
7)booted up, removed chip, realized it had different 5v connector

8) shutdown, soldered other wire on, turned it on, unplugged x3 modchip, plugged x3 CE, realized that i needed a file

9) decided to FTP settings since it was on. During FTP ing, shut off machine, dont remember why. After that, it wouldnt boot into X3, and front panel wouldnt turn on.

10) tested all wires and rechecked soldering points, swapped chips and turned on, tested box2 only. I remember taking the front panel switch from box1 and putting on box2, but dont remember the result ( i wanted to retest but he wouldnt let me.)

11) decided to put X3 into box1 and hd from box2 in also, but it wouldnt recognize the hd, so i put box 1 hd into box1 and the X3 into box1. (did not switch front panel as i t was glued on).

12) BOX1 booted up and was able to be configured for x3 and evox.

13) box2 boots into microsoft, but front panel switch does not light up and modchip only has one blue light on 5v, no 3.3v light.

14)did massive research w/ no luck and received advice from rookio and cohphasor to jump pins 9 and 12 with no luck.

12) HELP!

Ok, update. Woke up this morning, had a brainstorm that perhaps the motherboard CMOS needs to be reset, so i removed the board and looked for a switch or something. I didnt touch anything and put the board back in. Now it wont even power up. WTF is wrong with this thing?????? Someone help!

Thanks man, i know. Actually its funny. I did some research and found out some interesting things. Apparently, some people have had the experience of working on machines and all of a sudden, the box doesnt want to turn on, just like mine. Seems that it sometimes is caused by a transistor blowing out. Especially on the 1.6 boxes. They say that if the power from the transister is less than 3.3V or it's unsteady, than that is the problem. There's even a tutorial about it. http://downloads.ozxodus.com/Guides/Xbox_v1.6_Resurrection.pdfBUT, after i went out and bought the multimeter to test it and some other things, i came home to find that i could actually power it on. I tested the voltage and than the damn thing turned on. Weirdest thing..well, it turns out that my box is giving the proper voltage so i guess that wasnt the problem. Now i have gone to the trouble of buying a new motherboard and power supply to see if i can just swap it. Than i'll return the bad one and the unused parts. I figure its better than buying a new one.

Anyways, thanks for all the help. wish me luck.

IF you have bought a new motherboard Im SURE you aware of the impending problem.

Your Hard Drive if still locked (It IS unless YOU unlocked it intentionally) will ONLY work with the motherboard it came with.
(In effect it means that ALL your saved games are on the hard drive, and IF you want your saves you will need to get it running with the chip at leat long enough to FTP out the data.)

There are plenty of posts on HD locking, and of course saved games out there.

Def Rook, i read all about it. I got the mb with the harddrive which is cool. I can also sell the old equipment back. I didnt have any games saved yet, so thats cool too. Thanks for the advice man.

"13) box2 boots into microsoft, but front panel switch does not light up and modchip only has one blue light on 5v, no 3.3v light."

This sounds like a solder issue. I went a few days going crazy because I KNEW that ally of my solder connections were right but it wouldnt work...

But i soldered the d0 in the wrong spot. I would suggest looking closer at your soldering points making sure they are in the right spot.. and if you did a pin adapter install making sure that the pins are alinged PERFECTLY, any bending or unevenness and it will not work... (I perfer the wire mount install, less connections to worry about, easier to fix)

i use massive amounts of electrical tape to steady the wiring when soldering and then making sure they do not short.

Since Box 2 is your friends install you dont know the quality of job he did.

I doubt you need to buy a new mother board you just need to check out how you friend installed the mod that you now own.

Also, did you check the chip to make sure that there are no bent pins for the front panel connection?

Thanks Commodore, but the box was working before i messed with it, and i checked the solder points, but they are fine. This kinda thing always happens to me. i got a brand new car that has a radiator fluid leak also, but no one can find out where it's coming from. sh*t happens...

My suggestion,...use your pointer fingers on both hands to make a "gun" and the touch the tips of your pointer fingers together.
Now,...get a friend to do a "katrate chop" between your two pointer fingers.

There,...curse broken!!

Funny you should say that commodore, yesterday i did notice the black wire had a 2 pins that were bent. I spent an hour bending them back. Is there anywhere i can buy the wire? I looked all over for it, but couldnt find it.

Hey, even though they're called good luck charms, they never tell you who the luck is good for, or what type of good luck.
It might be "good" accident luck. ;-)

Hey guys, my roommate (who i broke and traded the box to) just left. I took the opportunity to test out my switch on his box and it works. So i am thinking maybe it is just that wire? what do you guys think? however the 3 volt light still doesnt come on. Should i just attempt a new board? Should i send it to some pro's for repair? and does anyone know how i can get a new black wire? i think i should get one, but i cant find one. Maybe the All Great Team Xecuter could help me out and sell me one?

Maybe it is good accident luck, after all, the company i am working for is probably about to loose their contract, but a company we work with may want to hire me ( going for interview on next wed, day after my bday), My car, which i actually cant afford anymore, is breaking down bigtime and its still under warranty, may qualify for the Lemon Law treatment and i may be able to get my money back or a better car. The only "bad " thing that doesnt have a good result is my xbox, which is my gf bday present to me, along with the modchip.

Well, at least i met some nice people along the way.... :-D

I'd get it looked at by a pro before getting a new board. Or if your cashed up, go buy a new board and send the old one to me! i'll try to fix and make some money! :)

I would send it to you to fix, but your all the way out in Australia... I'm kinda hard up for cash too, so i'm trying to do whatever is most cost efficient. You dont sound like your from out there, watcha doin out there anyways?

I figure if i send it to someone, the shipping alone is gonna offset the board cost, so might as well find out whats wrong and trade in the old crap for money.
