3293 can backup games on your hdd no problems.... but you can't run them until you put a hacked dashboard on. for a simple easy to use one, get Evox. For a really good one get XBMC, but then you can always change later. also you can get 3294 bios onto your xbox, it's newer :D

If you ran slayers, have you tried clicking boot to dash on the config live screen? you may alreadyhave evox on their.

Sure Is, thats much better in my oppinion.

You download your Dash from xbins and unrar the files. Then copy them to the xbox through FTP. Depends on the dash but most of them you just copy the whole lot into the c: drive. Then you tell X3 Config Live which dashboard you installed (set dashboard boot priority to the same filename of your new dashboard)

Evox is good for beginnners. You will need to add the App DVD2Xbox 7.0 to copy games from it if you load the dash straight from xbins. On the slayers disc there is a version of it included. It may be your dvddrive not reading your discs. I know you said you spent a lot of $$ on discs but Thompson drives suck bad. If you have one, that could still be your problem.

You don't need to change any file names at all.
Download evox and unrar it, then ftp the evoxdash.xbe file, the evox ini (config setting) file, trainers folder and skin folder to the c: drive. you don't need the bios folder.
go into x3 configlive and find the dashboard boot priority screen and move evoxdash.xbe to the top of the list, then find the line autostart x3cl and change it from enabled to disabled.
reboot and it should launch evox for you. To get back into x3cl you hold down the white button on bootup.
The only settings you need to change in the ini file to start with are the network ip settings, you can use notepad to open and change it before you ftp it over or once you have evox up and running you can go into the setting menu and change it there.
Evox is good but i changed to unleashx because it is just as easy to use and i think it is easier to set up applications on. You just drop them into a folder called apps on e: drive and reboot for unleash to find them automatically whereas in evox you have to add a line to the ini file.
on a different subject are you using dvd's or cdrw's burn to, because xboxs don't like cd's.
