Hi all, thanks for the help in getting this far...

Problem: unable to ping xbox at listed IP address

I have read all available FAQs, tuts, and posts aver the last couple days but have been unable to resolve problem.

Background: Xbox ver 1.1; X3 w/1959 bios installed; evox dash booting from CD-RW.

Network card installed on PC running Windows XP- driver automatically installed via Windows.

Network pings OK to address 127.0.0.1 (recommended address to check card in windows troubleshooting guide)

PC network Settings:
IP address 192.168.0.1
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Default gateway 192.168.0.1

Network pings OK to address 192.168.0.1 using command prompt "ipconfig"

XBOX settings via evox dash settings menu:
Type: Static
IP: 192.168.1.2
Line Status: 100/Full Duplex
Ethernet MAC Address: 00:50:F2:94:FA:B9
Setup network: Yes
Use Static IP: Yes
IP: 192.168.1.2
Subnetmask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.7
FTP:Yes
Password:xbox

Cable used to connect Xbox to PC is a Belkin Cat5e Crossover cable with Male/Male ends (colors of wires in ends do not match).

Problem: when I attempt to ping either the Xbox IP address or default gateway address I get a "Request Timed Out" message on the command prompt. I get the same message when attempting to connect using FlashFXP (I am trying address 192.168.1.2 with Port 21 and username and password "xbox").

Obviously, I am new to this networking game. I had no problem connecting to the server to download my bios and dashboard- any ideas as to why I am having such trouble? (Please don't suggest checking my soldering again...:p )
I believe the cable is the correct type and of a reputable brand; the card is a Belkin brand 10/100BT Ethernet internal card I just bought and installed.
I have double checked that the firewall settings under Local area connection>Properties>Advanced are off (box unchecked)...

Help!?

Thanks,
-sean

The X3 Config Live should tell you what the IP Address is on the bottom left hand side. You don't need to go out and try out IP's.

You put your Xbox in a different subnet.

Your PC is 192.168.0.x and your Xbox is 192.168.1.x

Your gateways are all wrong too. Make your PC 192.168.0.2 and your Xbox 192.168.0.3 Specify 192.168.0.1 as the gateway on both devices.

Also just an FYI if you were to use DHCP to get the dashboard installed you can download this opensource standalone app for scanning your subnet and finding all devices with an address that respond to pings.

Good Luck.

EdgeAZ,
Thanks for the help - it worked! That is the most straightforward instruction I have seen in all my searching- ever considered writing a short tutorial on the topic?
Thanks again

Vyrus,
just a note- the IP listed by X3 would have worked- but only if I had set the PC IP to a different address and the gateway on both to a third IP. EdgeAZ had all the right info. Thanks for your input though.

Unfortunately subnetting is a very indepth topic.. It took me weeks of studying to understand it properly.

I am glad you are up and running :)

I was just clearing up that you didn't need to use other IP addresses.
