I made a crossover cable so i'd beable to connect my xbox to my pc to move files back and forth with out having to go though my router. It brings an IP address up on my xbox, but my ftp client won't connect to it.

Now I'm connecting throught the internet on my pc through my wireless card, and when the cross over cable is connected from my lan card to the xbox it says limited or no internet access through the hard wired connection.

Is there some way to beable to connect throught the crossover? or do i have to just keep running coords across the house?

You have your IP settings wrong on the interface for the cross over cable.

Limited or no access means that your PC is reconizing the cable but since the IP settings are wrong it won't work.

Question what was wrong with using your router? Also in your network configurations set your NIC to these settings

STATIC IP
PC
IP= 192.168.1.1
SUB= 255.255.255.0
Gateway=192.168.1

Xbox
IP= 192.168.1.2
SUB= 255.255.255.0
Gateway=192.168.1

Don't worry about the DNS settings

There's nothing wrong with using a router!

In fact, 99.9% of the time your not using a router when you think you are. If you own a router you actually have a layer 2 switch with one routed port. On a linksys it'll say WAN or INTERNET INTERFACE on one of the ports... that the routed one. The rest are switch ports.

"What does this mean?" you ask "Why does it burn when I pee?" you cry...

Well, I'll tell you. A cross over cable and a switched port are (for our purposes) the same thing.

When you have an xbox and a PC connected to your switch you set it up the same way that you do if you had a cross over cable.

The only difference is on the switch you can connect more than two devices together and with the cable you only connect the two.

So, even if you used straight through cables, connected to your router... you'd still have to do the same thing. Your router might give IP addresses which would help but... chances are your going to put in static IP's to make it work.

Oh yeah, and the burning pee thing is because you've been with a woman whos unclean.

Get some bleach and some Q-tips... it'll fix ya right up.

Well my pc and xbox are in the same room, my pc runs off of a wireless card because my router is up a story and across the house. It takes me a good 60 feet of lan cable to connect my pc, and another 60 feet to connect my xbox.

Soooo I had 2 100 footers but I chopped one up to make the lan cable so now to use my router I either have to move stuff over wireless or buy a nother 100 footer.

*edit*
forgot my pc usally gets like blah blah blah.2 because the router takes .1 to share.

I'm guessing you have two network cards on your PC. One (Lets call it NIC1) goes to your router. The other (NIC2) is what you're using to connect to your Xbox.

Get the IP address \ subnet mask of NIC 1. Let me know what it is.

Ahh yes, Networking 101 Today lesson: Routers and you:D

I was just curious why he was using a crossover when he has a possible 4 port switch at his grasp. But now I see why he has no choice but to do what he is doing without laying Cat5E throught out the house.

ok, set up NIC 2 on your PC to the following:

IP 192.168.10.1
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway (blank)

Now set your Xbox IP address as (for example):

IP 192.168.10.10
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.10.1

You should be able to ping the Xbox from the PC once you've done this.

Martin will get ya straight - He helped me run down my issues until I finally took the easy way out & got a D-Link Dss 5+ switch. I just didn't want to keep chasing the problem down & the money I spent on cables was about the same as the switch. ($25 at OfficeMax)

I never could get the darn cross over cable to do a pc to console link even with static IP's. Plugged the switch in & -instant joy!- plus it uses crossover or straight thru cables.

SUB= 255.255.255.0
Gateway=192.168.1 <You do not have to have this but it does not hurt.

Xbox
IP= 192.168.1.2
SUB= 255.255.255.0
Gateway=192.168.1

lol I knew you would pick up on that!

I wasn't going to suggest any IP Addresses until I knew the address of the working one. My luck would have been giving him the same subnet as his PC to Router configuration :)

Kinda figured that why you wanted to know his NIC1 IP address!:D
